NEW YORK -- Auston Matthews had a goal and an assist in his first game in two weeks to help the Toronto Maple Leafs stop a four-game road losing streak with a 3-2 win against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Saturday.
Toronto (22-14-1) hadn't won a road game since Dec. 9 at the Pittsburgh Penguins, Matthews last game before he sat out six with a concussion.

William Nylander had a goal and an assist, Ron Hainsey scored and Morgan Rielly had two assists. Frederik Andersen made 30 saves.

"I felt fine as the game went on," Matthews said. "Those first couple shifts, I wasn't feeling too good and then I had to get the legs under me. [Nylander] and [Zach Hyman] got me involved pretty early. I got the feel back with the puck and to get involved early, rolling around in the zone, your confidence takes off from there."
Jimmy Vesey and J.T. Miller scored for the Rangers, and Henrik Lundqvist made 34 saves. Michael Grabner's would-be game-tying goal at 12:09 of the third period was negated by Toronto's successful coach's challenge for offside.
The Rangers (19-13-4) lost in regulation at home for the first time since Nov. 28 and the second time since Oct. 23. They have lost back-to-back games, including 4-3 in a shootout at the New Jersey Devils on Thursday.
"The last two games are kind of a reminder for us of how hard we have to work and how well we have to play to get points," Lundqvist said. "We are not one of the top teams. We are one of those teams that are going to battle really hard to get in [to the Stanley Cup Playoffs], so we need the best effort every night to have a chance."
Matthews' goal at 11:22 of the second, his 14th of the season, was the game-winner.
Nylander kept the puck alive along the left-wing boards low in zone. Hyman retrieved it and moved it to Matthews in the slot. With Lundqvist lying flat, Matthews deked to his backhand and lifted it into the net for a 3-1 lead.
"He's the wrong guy to face one-on-one in front of the net," Lundqvist said. "He had a really good game. It felt like he was all over us. He had breakaways and a lot of chances in front."

Miller made it 3-2 at 11:25 of the third. Grabner thought he tied it 44 seconds later, but video review showed that Kevin Hayes entered the zone early.
Toronto coach Mike Babcock gave credit to assistant Andrew Brewer and video analyst Jordan Bean for catching the offside and signaling down to the bench for him to challenge.
"I never thought much about it," Babcock said. "I mean, [Hayes'] foot was offside. It was obvious."
Nylander gave Toronto a 1-0 lead at 17:14 of the first period, 5:13 after the Maple Leafs finished killing off a 5-on-3 Rangers power play. He scored his seventh of the season on a far-side one-timer from the right circle off a pass from Matthews.
The goal capped a 63-second possession in the offensive zone, all after the Rangers iced the puck and were forced to keep the same players on the ice, including defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk, who was credited with a shift length of 3:43.
"Their line [Matthews, Hyman and Nylander] dominated," Babcock said. "They were heavy in the offensive zone. They made good plays. They scored two goals. They were a good line."
Hainsey made it 2-0 with a power-play goal 50 seconds into the second period. Vesey cut the lead in half 1:47 later.
"We wanted to focus and not really be in holiday mode yet," Matthews said. "Just take 60 minutes out of your day, play a hockey game, play it well and then have the rest of the break."

They said it

"We're a good hockey club that's getting better. We still got lots of work to do. We look like a young team a lot when we start turning the puck over and doing silly things. We haven't been as consistent as we like, but I think we've got a good hockey club and a club that is going in the right direction, so that's positive." -- Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock
"It's a sour feeling. We had a tough game against the Devils, where we didn't have a great effort collectively, and tonight it was just so-so at times." -- Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh
