Detroit led 3-0 after one period and never looked back. Darcy Kuemper, who made his fifth consecutive start in place of injured starter Antti Raanta, stopped just 12 of 17 shots before being yanked early in the third period after Andreas Athanasiou scored a breakaway goal to give the Red Wings a 5-0 lead.
The Coyotes beat the Washington Capitals, 4-1, on Sunday and took Monday off to rest before concluding the four-game trip at Detroit. The strategy seemed to backfire.
"It's disappointing to the coaching staff because you warn them (about Detroit's speed)," Tocchet said. "It was just a lackluster (effort) by some guys. I don't know if it was the day off yesterday, I don't know if it's the end of the trip and guys want to go home. I don't know. But it's inconsistent hockey the last two weeks and it's something we're going to have stamp out really quick."
Tocchet also didn't care for his team's decision-making.
"You've got to be ready to play these games," Tocchet said. "They were warned. Detroit is a quick team and they're quick to pucks, so you've got to make your decisions quick … and when you're not focused and you're not sharp, hockey IQ goes. That's one of my pet peeves - not having hockey IQ. That's a tough one for me."
• The Coyotes came out the loser on two coach's challenges - one by them and one by Detroit. The first one they lost occurred when Arizona challenged Detroit's second goal at 12:24 of the first period citing goaltender interference. After review, the goal by Dennis Cholowski was allowed. The second one occurred after Christian Fischer scored a goal at 1:38 of the second period to cut Detroit's lead to 3-1. The Red Wings challenged, however, contending Fischer was off-side on the play, which he was. After review, the goal was not allowed.
