DETROIT -- Two days after beating the defending Stanley Cup champs by three goals, the Coyotes snoozed their way through a humbling, lopsided loss to the Red Wings, a non-playoff team from last season.
Mike Green notched a goal and two assists, and Jimmy Howard made 24 saves for Detroit as it rolled to a 6-1 victory over Arizona on Tuesday night at Little Caesers Arena.
With the loss, the Coyotes completed a four-game trip vs. Eastern Conference teams with a 1-2-1 record.

"We were just a half-second slow everywhere," Coyotes Head Coach Rick Tocchet said. "Detroit was fast and we were slow … and when we did shoot, we were slow to shoot and they were blocking shots. Detroit played a good game."

Tocchet: 'We Were Slow'

Detroit led 3-0 after one period and never looked back. Darcy Kuemper, who made his fifth consecutive start in place of injured starter Antti Raanta, stopped just 12 of 17 shots before being yanked early in the third period after Andreas Athanasiou scored a breakaway goal to give the Red Wings a 5-0 lead.
The Coyotes beat the Washington Capitals, 4-1, on Sunday and took Monday off to rest before concluding the four-game trip at Detroit. The strategy seemed to backfire.
"It's disappointing to the coaching staff because you warn them (about Detroit's speed)," Tocchet said. "It was just a lackluster (effort) by some guys. I don't know if it was the day off yesterday, I don't know if it's the end of the trip and guys want to go home. I don't know. But it's inconsistent hockey the last two weeks and it's something we're going to have stamp out really quick."
Tocchet also didn't care for his team's decision-making.
"You've got to be ready to play these games," Tocchet said. "They were warned. Detroit is a quick team and they're quick to pucks, so you've got to make your decisions quick … and when you're not focused and you're not sharp, hockey IQ goes. That's one of my pet peeves - not having hockey IQ. That's a tough one for me."
• The Coyotes came out the loser on two coach's challenges - one by them and one by Detroit. The first one they lost occurred when Arizona challenged Detroit's second goal at 12:24 of the first period citing goaltender interference. After review, the goal by Dennis Cholowski was allowed. The second one occurred after Christian Fischer scored a goal at 1:38 of the second period to cut Detroit's lead to 3-1. The Red Wings challenged, however, contending Fischer was off-side on the play, which he was. After review, the goal was not allowed.

• Defenseman Jakob Chychrun played his first game of the season after missing the first 16 games as he recovered from off-season knee surgery. It was a big day for Chychrun, who also signed a six-year contract extension before the game began.
"It's good to be back," Chychrun said. "Obviously, it was a long road. I was itching to get back. This is where I want to be, out on the ice with the guys and going to battle with them. I'm upset we couldn't get this one tonight but we'll forget about it and move forward."

Chychrun on Debut, Red Wings

Chychrun played 20:39, took three shots on goal and blocked a shot. He was minus-2.
"There's little things, obviously, that will come sooner than later," Chychrun said, after asked to assess his performance. "There were a couple of things I noticed here and there where I wasn't necessarily myself. I wasn't expecting to pick up where I left off last year, but I'll take little things, day by day, and hopefully I can get there soon."
• Tocchet inserted 23-year-old rookie Hunter Miska into Arizona's net at 1:44 of the third period. It was Miska's first appearance in an NHL game and he fared OK, stopping eight of the nine shots he faced in mop-up duty.

Miska: 'It Was Surreal'

"It was pretty crazy, actually," Miska said. "Surreal. It's a dream come true to be able to step foot on the game sheet and get some action in. It was a little bit faster than what I'm used to in the American (Hockey) League, so it was a little bit of a transition."

• Trailing 6-0, Lawson Crouse, who was a healthy scratch on Sunday at Washington, scored Arizona's lone goal at 11:21 of the third period with a wrist shot from the left circle.
Brad Richardson skated 11:45, took one shot, delivered three hits, blocked two shots and won 9 of 13 face-offs in his 700th NHL game.
