Ducks hang on to defeat Islanders

ANAHEIM --John Gibson had 39 saves, and Andrew Cogliano had a goal and an assist to help the Anaheim Ducks to a 3-2 win against the New York Islanders at Honda Center on Wednesday.
Thirteen of Gibson's saves came during Islanders power plays. Josh Manson and Ryan Getzlaf each had two assists, and Patrick Eaves scored a goal in his season debut for Anaheim (2-1-1). Getzlaf was playing his second game after missing the first two because of a lower-body injury.
"We keep getting guys back," Eaves said.

Brock Nelson scored two goals, and Joshua Ho-Sang had two assists for New York (1-2-1). Jaroslav Halak made 27 saves.
The Ducks took a 2-1 lead at 8:39 of the second period on a deflection by Rickard Rakell. Eaves made it 3-1 when he scored at 5:32 of the third.
"We knew we didn't play up to our potential (in the first period)," Rakell said. "Going into the locker room in a tied game, it was still a good feeling for us."

Nelson made it 3-2 with his second goal of the game at 7:57 of the third period, but Gibson made seven saves the rest of the way.
"We weren't able to regather the same momentum we had in the first," Nelson said. "It's frustrating, but there were some good things and some good looks."
The Ducks came in having led for 3:30 of 180:44 this season, but they scored the opening goal for the first time this season when Cogliano swept a rebound under Jaroslav Halak's right arm 37 seconds into the game.
"It's tough when you're crawling out of a hole the whole game," Ho-Sang said. "I thought the guys played really well. I thought the guys competed and everyone was strong throughout the game. We had a couple bad bounces, but you can't be down early."
The Islanders went on the first of five power plays at 1:56 of the first period and forced Gibson to make five saves on the man-advantage, and two more after New York maintained possession in the Anaheim zone after the penalty expired. Derek Grant also made a sliding block to prevent a goal.

Back-to-back icings kept Anaheim's third line on the ice, and Nelson won the faceoff after the second icing call. He cut directly to the net and deflected a slap shot by Scott Mayfield past Gibson to make it 1-1 at 13:09 of the first.
"We scored our goal, killed a penalty and then we go flat," Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. "We relied on our goaltender to bail us out. Your goaltender can only do that so many times."
The Islanders out-shot the Ducks 21-6 in the first period.
"Probably the best period of the year," New York coach Doug Weight said.

Goal of the game

Manson nudged the puck to Cogliano as he fell to the ice and Cogliano entered the Islanders zone with speed. He left the puck behind for Ducks defenseman Cam Fowler, and his shot from the right circle was deflected downward by Rakell and between Halak's pads for a 2-1 lead.

Save of the game

Ducks forward Jakob Silfverberg got loose on a breakaway, but Halak made the save at 8:58 of the third period to keep the score 3-2.

Highlight of the game

Getzlaf passed the puck cross-ice to Manson on his left and Manson took the puck along the boards and behind the net. As he emerged on the other side of the net, Manson passed to Eaves in the right circle and shot it past Halak on the short side for a 3-1 Ducks lead.

The Islanders went 0-for-5 on the power play and are 0-for-15 this season. … Fowler has 13 points (three goals, 10 assists) in 12 games against the Islanders, the only NHL team he averages at least one point a game against and is the Ducks' all-time scoring leader against New York ...
