EDM@SJS: McDavid pots 100th NHL goal

Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid scored the 100th goal of his NHL career in his 230th game, a 4-3 overtime victory at the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday.

Among players to make their NHL debut with the Oilers, McDavid required the fourth-fewest games to score 100 NHL goals (all with Edmonton). McDavid (21 years, 311 days) also became the second-youngest player to score 100 goals with the Oilers, behind only Wayne Gretzky, who was 20 years and 40 days old when he scored his 100th goal on March 7, 1981. The other Oilers to score 100 goals faster than McDavid are Glenn Anderson (183 games) and Jari Kurri (214).
McDavid also had two assists to become the second player this season to surpass 30 points. He has 31 points (13 goals, 18 assists) in 21 games, one point behind Colorado Avalanche forward Mikko Rantanen (32 points; eight goals, 24 assists) for the NHL lead.
McDavid is the fifth different player in Oilers history to reach the 30-point mark in 21 or fewer games, but the first since Mark Messier had 31 points (12 goals, 19 assists) in 19 games in 1989-90. Gretzky holds the Edmonton record for the fewest games needed to get to 30 points; he had 11 goals and 19 assists in Edmonton's first 10 games in 1984-85.

Thornton ties Lemieux on assists list

Sharks center Joe Thornton had the 1,033rd assist of his NHL career on Marcus Sorensen's first-period goal in the loss to the Oilers to tie Mario Lemieux for 11th place on the League's all-time list. Every player ahead of Thornton -- other than Jaromir Jagr, who is not yet eligible -- has been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Another fast start

Forward Joonas Donskoi gave the Sharks an early lead against the Oilers when he scored 45 seconds into the game. It was the 28th opening-minute goal this season, the highest such total through the first 317 games of a season since 1992-93, when there were 29.
