Most recently, the Caps dropped a 5-2 decision to the Predators on Saturday night in Nashville. The setback was only Washington's second loss by more than one goal in the team's last 39 games, and both of those multiple-goal defeats came in the second game of a set of back-to-back contests.
The Caps are 28-6-5 over that 39-game span. Four of the team's regulation losses during that stretch came in the second half of a back-to-back set, and the other two came in their first games back in action after the NHL's holiday and All-Star breaks.
Saturday's game in Music City was Washington's fifth in a span of eight days coming out of its bye week, and the Caps went 2-2-1 during that stretch. They've played well over the lion's share of each of those five games, but their pre-bye week precision and consistency is still lacking. A poor first period cost them last Sunday against the Rangers in New York, and a dismal second period was the difference on Saturday against the Preds.
During the course of Wednesday's 4-1 win over the Flyers in Philadelphia, the Capitals - already playing without third-line right wing Andre Burakosvky - lost three regulars to injury. Defensemen Matt Niskanen and Brooks Orpik were both sidelined with lower body injuries while T.J. Oshie suffered an upper body ailment.
Defenseman Aaron Ness and right wing Riley Barber were summoned from AHL Hershey, and both acquitted themselves well in Friday's 2-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers at Verizon Center.
After enjoying an off day in Manhattan on Sunday, the Caps convened in Newark for an afternoon practice on Monday in preparation for Tuesday's tilt against the Rangers. Niskanen, Orpik and Oshie were all back on the ice with their teammates, although only Niskanen stayed on the ice for the duration of the session. It's still not known whether any of them have improved to the point where they'll be ready to take the ice against the Rangers.
