CGY@EDM: Gaudreau goes five-hole to extend streak

EDMONTON -- Johnny Gaudreau scored to extend his point streak to an NHL career-high 11 games in a 5-2 win against the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place on Saturday.

The Flames are 7-0-1 since Jan. 5.
"I feel good right now, playing hard, playing well," said Gaudreau, who has 10 goals and 12 assists during his point streak. "Our line (with Sean Monahan and Elias Lindholm) has some good chemistry, and our team is playing well, so it's a good recipe right now. We're coming together as a team, and it's a lot of fun to be a part of."

Mark Giordano had a goal and two assists, and Mikael Backlund and Monahan each had a goal and an assist for Calgary (32-13-5), which won at Rogers Place for the first time (1-3-2). David Rittich made 22 saves.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Milan Lucic scored for Edmonton (23-22-3), which lost for the first time in three games. Koskinen made 29 saves.
"They capitalized on their chances, and we didn't," Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl said. "We didn't generate too much. We didn't really create too many chances for ourselves. We hung in there for a while, but you aren't going to beat a team like that by playing half a game."

Gaudreau scored 44 seconds into the second period to give the Flames a 1-0 lead. He stepped around Draisaitl in the high slot after taking a pass from Lindholm and shot past Koskinen from the left face-off circle.
"He's elite," Calgary coach Bill Peters said of Gaudreau. "We're blessed in our league with the quality of players we have. We're blessed in the province of Alberta with the stars we have on each respective team. It's worth the price of admission. That's a fun game to be part of."
Giordano made it 2-0 at 7:29, fishing a loose puck on a scramble in front and lifting it over a sprawled Koskinen. The goal was upheld by video review after Edmonton coach Ken Hitchcock challenged for goalie interference by Monahan.
Oliver Kylington one-timed a cross-ice pass from Backlund between Koskinen's pads to make it 3-0 at 15:30.
"I thought 5-on-5 we played really well," Giordano said. "We didn't give them any scoring chances against all night. I thought their looks came 4-on-4 or on their power play. We did a great job, we had some big timely goals, a couple of power-play goals, and I thought [Kylington's] goal was big to make it 3-0."

Nugent-Hopkins scored with 18 seconds left in the second to make it 3-1, taking a pass from Jesse Puljujarvi and shooting over Rittich's shoulder.
"Our play wasn't good enough, and that's what got us into a 3-0 hole," Lucic said. "It was a really good play at the end of the second to give us some momentum going into the intermission. We had lots to look forward to going into the third."
Koskinen made the save against Derek Ryan on a shorthanded breakaway at 3:29 of the third period, and Lucic scored on the power play to make it 3-2 at 4:16.
Backlund scored unassisted at 14:15 to give the Flames a 4-2 lead. He intercepted a pass from Oilers defenseman Caleb Jones and scored from the right circle.
"We were really coming on and we had them on their heels," Hitchcock said. "Those are lessons that, unfortunately, you have to go through. It's a tough lesson, he'll learn from it, and he'll get better from it. We were mounting a comeback, and that one kind of took the wind our sails."
Monahan scored on the power play at 16:03 for the 5-2 final.

"It's a tough one. It happens, I made the play, he knocked it out of midair. I could have probably just turned and made a harder play out of the zone right there. I'll learn from it." -- Oilers defenseman Caleb Jones on his giveaway before the Flames' fourth goal
