CGY@ARI: Kuemper uses glove to deny Hathaway

GLENDALE, Ariz. --Darcy Kuemper made 30 saves, and Jakob Chychrun had a goal and an assist for the Arizona Coyotes in a 2-0 win against the Calgary Flames at Gila River Arena on Thursday.

Mike Smith made 23 saves for the Flames (41-20-7), who have lost four in a row and lead the San Jose Sharks by one point for first place in the Pacific Division.
"Obviously, we don't want to go on a slide where it's two or three weeks and we're not feeling good going into the playoffs," Smith said. "We want to fix it now. There's still spots in games where you need your best players to be your best players, but you need everyone to contribute."

Clayton Keller scored for the Coyotes (33-29-5), who have won seven of eight and are three points behind the Minnesota Wild for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference.
"There weren't any passengers, everyone worked hard tonight and they played for each other," said Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet, who was critical of his team's effort in a 3-1 loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday.

Kuemper is 8-1-0 with two shutouts in his past nine starts.
"He's been unbelievable. He makes it look so easy, he's always so calm," Chychrun said. "He's a calming presence back there and he's going to make the saves he should make. That's nice to rely on."
Keller gave Arizona a 1-0 lead at 10:16 of the first period, skating in with Christian Dvorak on a 2-on-1 and finishing with a one-timer from the right circle. Dvorak's assist was his first point in five games this season.
"[Keller] wasn't happy (about scoring one goal in previous 18 games)," Tocchet said. "He wanted to watch video yesterday, so we watched video and had a good talk. He played a determined game, and that's a big goal."
Shortly after the Coyotes killed off a Flames power play, Chychrun made it 2-0 with a shot from the point at 2:49 of the third period while Smith was getting back up in the crease after making the initial save on Dvorak. Flames coach Bill Peters challenged for goaltender interference, but the call was upheld after a video review.
"It's hard to score, it's hard to win this time of the year and a lot of teams are right there," Smith said. "[The Coyotes] work super hard, they're structured really well and they play their system to a `T.'"
Smith stopped Vinnie Hinostroza on a penalty shot at 12:34 of the third.
Calgary has scored two goals or fewer in seven of its past eight games, and Arizona has allowed two goals or fewer in six of its past eight games.
"It's always tough when you don't score, as a player but as a team, too," Flames center Mikael Backlund said. "The whole team is kind of struggling. It's a lot easier when it's just a couple of guys."

They said it

"We have a group here that wants to win, but it's going to take an elevation of our game. We've been good for a lot of the season, but this is the time when everyone gets a little bit better and we need to jump on board with that, too." -- Flames goalie Mike Smith
"The message was we didn't play great (against the Ducks), but we've done a lot of good things and let's stay even keel. We didn't get too down about it, everyone reset and you could see the effort tonight. Everyone was ready to work."-- Coyotes goalie Darcy Kuemper on bouncing back

"We've just got to keep winning, that's it. You can't have a bad week. You can have a bad day once in a while, but you can't have a bad week." -- Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet on the Western Conference playoff race
