Bruins hold Jets to 12 shots on goal in win

BOSTON -- Matt Beleskey, Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron each scored in a three-goal second period when the Boston Bruins defeated the Winnipeg Jets 4-1 at TD Garden on Saturday.
Boston (11-7-0) outshot Winnipeg 38-12 and won for the fourth time in its past five games and third straight time at home. Goaltender Tuukka Rask made 11 saves, and the Bruins set a season-low for shots allowed.

Boston forward Tim Schaller scored in the third period and defenseman Zdeno Chara had two assists.
"We were skating, we were battling, our forecheck was great," Rask said. "We didn't give them any time, any space anywhere on the ice. A very, very good effort."

Winnipeg goaltender Michael Hutchinson made 34 saves in his first start since Nov. 11, and forward Adam Lowry scored in the third period. The Jets (9-9-2), who set a season-low for shots on goal, have lost the first two games of their season-long five-game road trip.
"There isn't a piece of that game that we were good at," Winnipeg coach Paul Maurice said. "If we have to sit here today and get a silver lining: If you're going to be bad, you might as well be bad in all parts of your game so you can write that one off."

The Bruins outshot the Jets 14-4 in the first period but didn't score until the second period. A timely pinch down the left wall by Joe Morrow set up the first goal. After Morrow skated around Winnipeg forward Patrik Laine toward the goal line, Morrow passed the puck back toward the middle. Beleskey was at the left hash mark for a one-timer that beat Hutchinson at 2:01 for a 1-0 lead.
Marchand scored on a breakaway at 11:37 for his first goal in six games to make it 2-0. Bergeron's first goal in seven games, a one-timer from the bottom of the left circle during a 5-on-3 power play at 17:00, extended the lead to 3-0. Bruins coach Claude Julien was pleased Marchand and Bergeron were able to end goal droughts.
"It helps a lot I think," Julien said. "A lot of good things happened tonight that I'm hoping is going to be a positive sign moving forward here, and that's some of those guys taking a little bit of pressure off their shoulders of producing."
Schaller beat Hutchinson to the short side at 1:41 for a 4-0 lead.
Lowry scored from in front of the Boston net at 17:20 to cut the lead to 4-1.

Goal of the game

Marchand took Chara's indirect pass in the neutral zone and broke in on Hutchinson from the left wall before beating the goaltender with a backhand shot. Marchand had to fight off Hutchinson's stick check to score.

Rask made a pad save on Blake Wheeler's tip attempt from in front of the net at 6:12 of the second period.

Highlight of the game

Defenseman Torey Krug made a pass from his own goal line to the Winnipeg blue line to set up Schaller's goal.

Unsung moment of the game

Chara has rarely played on the power play this season but got on the ice during the 5-on-3 in the second period. He led the rush up the ice and earned the secondary assist on Bergeron's goal.

Rask has three shutouts in his past six games and has allowed one goal in each of the other three, all in the third period. ... Morrow's assist on Beleskey's goal was his first point in five games this season. ... The 12 shots on goal were the fewest by a Bruins opponent since the Toronto Maple Leafs had 12 on Nov. 24, 2001. It was the lowest shot on goal total by a Bruins opponent in Boston since the Minnesota North Stars had 10 on Jan. 12, 1981.
