Brent Burns lifts Sharks past Coyotes

SAN JOSE-- Brent Burns scored a power-play goal 19 seconds into overtime to give the San Jose Sharks a 2-1 win against the Arizona Coyotes at SAP Center on Tuesday.
The Sharks went on a power play with 0.3 seconds left in regulation when forward Martin Hanzal went to the penalty box for high sticking Melker Karlsson. San Jose opened overtime with a 4-on-3 advantage, and Burns quickly ended the game when he took a pass from Joe Pavelski in the left circle and beat Coyotes goalie Mike Smith with a slap shot.
"A great shot," Sharks coach Pete DeBoer said. "In that play, you've got Burns on one side and (Logan) Couture on the other loaded up for shots. You can go either way with it. It's nice when you have weapons like that that can execute."

Chris Tierney scored in the second period and Martin Jones made 18 saves for the Sharks (13-9-1), who moved into first place in the Pacific Division.
Smith made 40 saves for the Coyotes (8-10-3), who had a second-period goal from forward Max Domi.
"Anytime you lose, there's frustration," Smith said. "I thought we started well. It was one of our better starts in this arena we've had in the first 10 minutes or so. And then it kind of got away from us."
The Sharks outshot Arizona 14-5 in a scoreless first period, but Domi gave the Coyotes a 1-0 lead at 17:19 of the second with a wrist shot from the left circle.
Tierney tied it at 15:29 of the second period with his second goal of the season, jamming the puck between Smith's pads from close range. Mikkel Boedker, a former Coyote, had the primary assist, his first point in 13 games.
Coyotes defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson sustained an upper-body injury in the second period. Arizona coach Dave Tippett did not have an update on Ekman-Larsson's injury after the game.

Goal of the game

Boedker sent Tierney a pass along the right boards below the goal line. Tierney took the puck hard to the net and beat Smith between the pads with a wrist shot. It was his second goal in five games. "We were talking about taking it to the net a couple shifts right before that, so right when I saw the opening I thought I would just take it right there and see what happens," Tierney said. "Just tried to shove it in, and it ended up in."

Save of the game

Smith helped secure at least one point for the Coyotes with 4:17 left in regulation when he made a pad save against Joel Ward's redirection off a shot from Marc-Edouard Vlasic.

Unsung moment of the game

Vlasic is typically in the right place at the right time, and that was the case at 11:27 of the first period when he cleared the puck from the crease before the Coyotes could capitalize.

Highlight of the game

The Coyotes showed off their speed and skill on Domi's goal. Defenseman Luke Schenn sent a pass back from the right circle to a trailing Radim Vrbata, who sent a cross-ice pass to Domi in the left circle. Domi put a wrist shot into the upper left corner of the net.

Sharks forward Patrick Marleau appeared to score 60 seconds into the game, but Tippett challenged the call and after a video review it was overturned because Dillion was offside. ... Karlsson returned to the lineup after missing seven games because of a left ankle injury. He had four shots in 11:37 of ice time. ... Coyotes defenseman Connor Murphy played his 200th career NHL game. ... Coyotes forward Shane Doan played his 1,487th career NHL game, tying Wayne Gretzky for 19th on the all-time list.
