DETROIT -- Mike Smith made 37 saves and Jamie McGinn scored twice to help the Arizona Coyotes defeat the Detroit Red Wings 4-1 at Joe Louis Arena on Tuesday.
The Coyotes (10-14-5), who lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins 7-0 on Monday, won for the second time in nine games (2-4-3). Arizona is the last NHL team to reach 10 wins this season.
"That was certainly better than Monday," Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said. "I had a sense that these guys wanted to redeem themselves, and they played a solid game of hockey."
Center Peter Holland had two assists in his Coyotes debut. Holland was acquired in a trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday.

"Peter gave us the solid center that we've needed for a while," Tippett said. "Having him out there immediately brought McGinn back into the game."
The Red Wings (13-13-4) are 0-2-1 in the first three games of a five-game homestand and 2-8-3 at home since Oct. 29. Jimmy Howard made 15 saves.
"It's unacceptable to come out with that effort," Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall said. "There's no way our game can look like that."

Detroit went more than 14 minutes before getting its first shot of the game. The Red Wings had seven shots in the first period and 31 in the second and third period.
"I just don't think we were ready to start the game when the puck dropped," Detroit forward Anthony Mantha said.
The Coyotes took a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 2:01 of the first period. Tony DeAngelo took a cross-ice pass from Tobias Rieder and beat Howard with a wrist shot from the left faceoff dot for his third goal.

Detroit made it 1-1 at 16:12 of the first. Smith stopped Gustav Nyquist's shot, but the rebound bounced in off Andreas Athanasiou's skate for his fifth goal.
Lawson Crouse gave Arizona a 2-1 lead with 15.6 seconds left in the period, beating Howard with a backhand from the edge of the crease for his second goal.
"That was a huge goal for us," Tippett said. "Being able to take a lead out of that period was great for our confidence."
McGinn made it 3-1 at 2:39 of the second period, scoring from point-blank range after Holland's pass.
"It took a few shifts, but we really started clicking in the second period," Holland said. "It felt good to get out there and play a role."
McGinn scored again to make it 4-1 at 11:27 of the third, one-timing Anthony Duclair's pass from behind the net.
"This was fun," McGinn said. "We haven't had much fun lately."
Red Wings defenseman Alexey Marchenko left in the third period after aggravating a shoulder injury and did not return. Coach Jeff Blashill said he is day to day.

Goal of the game

Playing together for the first time, Holland got the puck in the right faceoff circle and shoveled a pass to the edge of the crease, where McGinn's wrist shot trickled under Howard.

Save of the game

Moments after setting up DeAngelo's goal, Rieder almost made it 2-0 on a shorthanded breakaway, but Howard kicked out his right pad to make the save.

Highlight of the game

Nyquist nearly made it 3-2 with a quick wrist shot early in the third period, but Smith made a pad save and then stopped Nyquist again on the rebound.

Unsung moment of the game

Radim Vrbata set up Crouse's goal at the end of the first period with nice plays on both ends of the ice. He blocked Danny DeKeyser's shot, controlled the loose puck, broke into the Detroit end and hit Crouse at speed with a pass.
