LAS VEGAS — Blake Coleman had a pair of goals for the Flames, but the host Golden Knights overcame three separate one-goal deficits to score a 6-3 win Thursday at T-Mobile Arena.

Morgan Frost had the other Calgary marker, while Mitch Marner led the way for the home side with a hat-trick and two assists.

The Flames scored the only goal of the opening frame, and it was thanks to some brilliant patience from Frost. After creating a turnover in the neutral zone which led to a 2-on-1 rush, Frost waited, stick-handled, then picked his spot and rifled the puck past Carter Hart’s glove hand for his 19th goal of the season.

But Wolf’s impact on the first frame was just as important. The Calgary netminder made 14 stops over the opening 20 minutes, his best coming with about five minutes left on the clock as he slid - while doing the splits - to deny Pavel Dorofeyev on a one-timer attempt from the right circle.

Marner tied it at 1-1 1:47 into a see-saw second period that saw the hosts rally from three separate one-goal deficits.

Coleman restored the Flames lead three minutes after that first equalizer, accepting a pass from Mikael Backlund on an odd-man rush, moments after Wolf charged out of his crease to poke the puck away from an onrushing Golden Knights forward at the other end of the rink.

Coleman scores a beauty against Knights

Marner got a second for Vegas at 6:42, then Coleman returned the favour with an individual effort with 7:49 to play in the period. Off a defensive zone face-off, Coleman chipped past a pinching Rasmus Andersson at the Calgary blue line, caught up to the puck and walked in on a 2-on-1 rush down the left wing. Rather than dish the disc, Coleman chose instead to wire it high glove on Hart for his second tally of the contest.

Blake gets another gem

But Vegas replied once again on their fourth powerplay of the game, Marner setting up Dorofeyev for his 35th of the season to even the score at 3-3 before the second intermission.

Then came the delay.

An ice issue to the left of the Calgary goal prompted a full-on team approach by the T-Mobile Arena ice staff, with the four officials and leaders from both sides keeping a watchful eye on proceedings. But after a 29-minute delay, the ice was deemed useable, and play continued on.

The game remained tied until the 12:20 mark of the frame, when Brett Howden gave Vegas its first lead of the night with a wrist shot from the slot.

Ivan Barbashev added an insurance marker two-and-a-half minutes later before Marner completed his hat-trick with a wraparound goal with 89 seconds left in the game.

In the first period, Flames defenceman Zach Whitecloud was saluted for his eight years of service - and Stanley Cup triumph - with the Golden Knights organization, the video tribute drawing a standing ovation from the 17,912 in attendance.
