The Ducks named today Aaron Cooney Play-by-Play Announcer for the club’s 24/7 audio network Ducks Stream, the most comprehensive team-focused audio network in the NHL. Cooney will join Color Analyst Emerson Etem and Host Alexis Downie in the Anaheim Ducks audio broadcast booth for all pre-, regular and postseason games hosted on Ducks Stream.
“We’re so pleased to name Aaron as the new radio voice of the Ducks,” said Ducks President Aaron Teats. “He is a bright new voice in the NHL and has earned this opportunity.”
Cooney joins the Ducks broadcast team after spending the past three seasons as the television and radio play-by-play broadcaster of the San Diego Gulls, Anaheim’s primary development affiliate in the American Hockey League. He also called 15 games on Ducks Stream the past two seasons and the First Round of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs, filling in for longtime Ducks voice Steve Carroll. He made his NHL broadcast debut with the Ducks Jan. 23, 2025 against his hometown Pittsburgh Penguins at Honda Center.
Carroll retired last season after spending 50 years in broadcasting, the last 27 with the Ducks. He was inducted into the Southern California Sports Broadcasters Hall of Fame on Jan. 13, 2026.
In his role with the Gulls, Cooney provided play-by-play for all of the team’s home and road games, oversaw the club’s Gulls All Access magazine-style show on local network television, hosted a team-focused podcast and served as a contributor to the club’s digital platforms. He also represented the Gulls at Signature Events and a plethora of community events that help connect the team to the community.

Cooney spent one season in the NHL with the Los Angeles Kings in their public relations department during the 2022-23 campaign after he served as the Gulls’ Director of Communications and Broadcasting for two seasons (2020-21 & 2021-22). In his front office role for the Gulls, he oversaw external media and public relations while leading its broadcast department and its television and radio network initiatives.
Cooney spent nearly eight years with the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) as the team’s Director of Broadcasting and Media Relations from 2013-21, where he called the club’s 2017 OHL championship and Memorial Cup run. He oversaw all play-by-play commentary for home and away games while managing day-to-day communications needs, voicing junior games for prominent alumni Connor McDavid (2013-15), Alex DeBrincat (2014-17), Dylan Strome (2013-17) and Jamie Drysdale (2018-20). During his final three years in Erie, he also served as the team’s Director of Marketing and Partnerships, opening new avenues for revenue growth while maintaining the team’s broadcast contracts and media obligations.
A native of Pittsburgh, Cooney also spent one season as an intern with the Pittsburgh Penguins Radio Network in 2012-13. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Radio & TV Broadcasting with a minor in Public Relations at Point Park University in Pittsburgh, Penn. He earned honors that included the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) Best Radio Sports Update Award (2013) and the IBS Best Play-by-Play Award (2010). He provided radio play-by-play commentary for various Point Park University athletic programs, including basketball (Men’s and Women’s), baseball, softball, and volleyball. In addition, Cooney served as host of Pioneer Sideline, the university's weekly sports television program featuring analysis, highlights, stories and updates on the school's athletic teams.
