WHAT'S NEXT
The Devils finish their four-game road trip with a stop in Pittsburgh Saturday night. The game can be seen on MSG and heard on the Devils Hockey Network, including right here at NewJerseyDevils.com. Puck drop is 5:38 p.m. ET.
Here are some observations from the game...
- The Devils suffered a few breakdowns in the second period that allowed St. Louis to build a 3-1 lead. And the Devils couldn't find enough offense in the final 30 minutes to overcome the hole.
"Individual mistakes that were costly," Ruff said. "Nothing more."
- The Yegor Sharangovich - Haula - Fabian Zetterlund trio is starting to find their groove. Haula connected for his fifth goal of the season thanks to two incredible plays by Zetterlund. His forecheck pressure forced Robert Thomas to turn the puck over in the right corner. After stealing, Zetterlund would get the puck back along the goal line. He made a perfect pass to Haula cutting to the net. From there, Haula finished the shot. Zetterlund also made a great delay read pass to set up a Sharangovich goal in the previous game against Columbus. He's been playing some of his best hockey.
"For the most part of I thougth (that line) gave us some good hockey, but it wasn't a night where we got consistant hockey out of all four lines," Ruff said.
- Sharangovich's assist on Haula's goal was his 100th career point in the NHL (52g-48a).
- The Devils have found something with Jesper Boqvist and Mercer. The twosome had a good stretch together in mid-January (along with Michael McLeod), posting nine points (4g-5a) combined in a three-game span (11 with McLeod's two assists). The duo struck again to get the Devils on the board late in the first period. Boqvist pushed the puck toward the net. Mercer caught a pass in the high slot, pulled the toward the goal line and tried to feed Boqvist atop the crease. Boqvist eventually got a shot, and Mercer - standing unchecked along the goal line - found the puck and roofed it for the tally.
- Defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler had the save of the game. After Kyrou got in all alone on Mackenzie Blackwood, he slid the puck through the Devils' goaltender's five-hole. The puck trickled toward the goal line, but a diving effort by Siegenthaler to knock it away with his stick kept the puck out.
"I was already on the way to the net. I saw it going through the legs, but not quite hard," Siegenthaler said. "I looked behind Blackwood and saw it wasn't over the line yet. Thank god I got it in time."
- The Devils had one of their best first periods in some time. They had their legs going from the opening faceoff. The biggest factor was the Devils' breakouts. They took advantage of hitting the weakside player through the neutral zone, which pulled St. Louis (which likes to overload the strong side) out of their structure and giving New Jersey a lane into the offensive zone. Once in the offensive zone, the Devils showed their superior speed by skating circles around the Blues.
