Reading is Cool is at capacity for the 2025-26 program, check back in August 2026 to register for the 2026-27 program.

Reading is Cool, powered by the Sharks Foundation, is a no-cost and unique literacy program focused on K-5th grade classrooms in Northern California.

The program is designed for individual classrooms and runs from October through March. The best feature of the program is that it is easy to integrate and teachers can make it fit their class' needs.

Every teacher who registers will be provided:

  • Bookmarks for every student
  • Certificates of Achievement for every student
  • All-Star Reader and Student Tracking Poster to acknowledge outstanding readers
  • Classroom Goal Poster
  • Six medals to be awarded to All-Star Readers
  • One MVP Reader puck
  • Access to additional digital certificate incentives including: All-Star Reader, Reader of the Month, Most Minutes Read, and Most Improved

Note: Registration is limited to the first 1,000 classrooms.

New for 2025-26: Students track the number of minutes they read each month on printable Student Reading Logs. Teachers then report their class’ total minutes read each month. For the individual awards (medal, puck or printable certificates), teachers can select the student(s) each month they feel is most deserving based on number of minutes, pages, or books read; or they can base the decision on most improved or greatest effort. Teachers can submit one student each month to be featured on the Sharks webpage.

Along the way there are other exciting elements to the program including classroom visits from mascot S.J. Sharkie, links to view Celebrity Story Hours, and more!

The submission window for monthly total is the 1st - 7th of the following month.

During the month of February, teachers will have the opportunity to nominate a Top Reader to be chosen for a VIP experience at a San Jose Sharks game! The link for Top Reader nominations will be emailed directly to participating teachers in February 2025.
