Already regarded by many as the greatest coach in NHL history, Scotty Bowman only strengthened his legendary standing during his three seasons in Pittsburgh. Beginning as Craig Patrick’s right-hand man on the personnel side his first year, before spending the next two seasons behind the bench, the Penguins went Stanley Cup champs-Stanley Cup champs Presidents’ Trophy winner in Bowman’s three years with the team.

Bowman was at his coaching best in the opening two rounds of the ’92 playoffs. His mid-series shift to a neutral-zone trap led a 3-1 first-round series comeback against Washington. In the next round, the Penguins overcame Mario Lemieux’s broken hand to erase a 2-1 series deficit against the NHL’s best team, the New York Rangers.

Pittsburgh went on to conclude the ’92 postseason with an NHL-record 11-game win streak. (Bowman’s Penguins won 14-straight playoff games between ’92 and ’93, the NHL’s longest overall win streak over multiple seasons).

Although the ’92-93 Penguins fell short of a three-peat, Bowman’s club is still the Penguins’ most accomplished regular-season team. In the midst of winning the Penguins only Presidents’ Trophy, that club set team marks for wins (56), points (119), and goals for (367), and it established a 17-game win streak that’s still the NHL record.

Bowman played a huge role in helping Patrick transform Pittsburgh into back-to-back champs in his lone year on the personnel side. Among the players the Penguins acquired over the summer of ’90 and through the ’91 trade deadline: Ron Francis, Ulf Samuelsson, Joe Mullen, Larry Murphy, Bryan Trottier and Scott Young.
