Super 16: Hurricanes remain No. 1; Jets enter power rankings

The Florida Panthers moved up three spots from last week to land at No. 2 in the NHL.com Super 16 power rankings.

The Panthers have won four consecutive games while scoring 24 goals (6.0 goals per game) coming out of the holiday break. Their .727 points percentage is best in the Atlantic Division and second in the NHL behind the Carolina Hurricanes (.758), who remained No. 1 in the Super 16.
The St. Louis Blues made the biggest jump, four spots to No. 9. The Minnesota Wild took the biggest tumble, down four spots to No. 12. The Blues defeated the Wild 6-4 in the 2022 Discover NHL Winter Classic on Saturday.
The Winnipeg Jets moved into the Super 16 at No. 16, knocking out the Edmonton Oilers.
To create the NHL.com power rankings, each of the 13 participating staff members put together his or her version of what they think it should look like. Those were submitted and a point total assigned to each.
The team that was selected first was given 16 points, second got 15, third 14 and so on down to No. 16, which got one point.
Here is the Super 16:

1. Carolina Hurricanes (23-7-1)

Total points: 199
Last week: No. 1
The Hurricanes have won four in a row by a combined 21-8 and eight of nine since Dec. 4. They are 8-5-0 in games they allow the first goal, an NHL-best .615 points percentage.

2. Florida Panthers (22-7-4)

Total points: 188
Last week: No. 5
Jonathan Huberdeau has eight assists in his past three games. The forward is second in the NHL with 31 assists, three behind Oilers center Connor McDavid.

3. Washington Capitals (20-6-8)

Total points: 161
Last week: No. 3
John Carlson has scored six points (two goals, four assists) in three games since the holiday break with Washington winning two. The defenseman has scored 554 points (123 goals, 431 assists) in 843 games for the Capitals, tied with Bengt-Ake Gustafsson for seventh in their history and two behind Dale Hunter for sixth.

4. New York Rangers (22-8-4)

Total points: 159
Last week: No. 6
The Rangers have won three in a row, including two against the Tampa Bay Lightning, and have a point in five of six games (4-1-1). Their 48 points are the most they've had through the first 34 games since 2011-12 (48). New York is 18-2-2 when it does not allow a power-play goal.

5. Tampa Bay Lightning (22-8-5)

Total points: 155
Last week: No. 2
Ondrej Palat has scored nine points (three goals, six assists) in his past six games, including two goals and one assist by the forward in a 7-2 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday. Brayden Point has scored eight points (four goals, four assists) in five games since the forward returned after missing 14 games with an upper-body injury.

6. Toronto Maple Leafs (22-8-2)

Total points: 150
Last week: No. 4
William Nylander has a seven-game point streak (five goals, seven assists), and the forward has a point in 12 of 13 games since Nov. 24 (eight goals, 11 assists).

7. Colorado Avalanche (19-8-2)

Total points: 136
Last week: No. 7
The Avalanche have 32 goals from defensemen in 29 games this season, most in the NHL and six more than in 56 games last season. Cale Makar (14 goals), Devon Toews (five), Erik Johnson (five) and Bowen Byram (four) lead Colorado at the position.

8. Pittsburgh Penguins (19-8-5)

Total points: 110
Last week: No. 9
The Penguins have won nine consecutive games after rallying to defeat the St. Louis Blues 5-3 on Wednesday. Evgeni Malkin is nearing a return to the lineup. The center hasn't played this season because he's been rehabbing from offseason knee surgery but is now a full participant in practice.

9. St. Louis Blues (19-10-5)

Total points: 105
Last week: No. 13
Jordan Kyrou scored eight points (four goals, four assists) in three games since returning from the holiday break. The forward scored an NHL outdoor game record four points (two goals, two assists) in the Winter Classic.

10. Vegas Golden Knights (22-13-1)

Total points: 92
Last week: No. 10
The Golden Knights won an NHL record 14 straight regular-season games decided in overtime before losing 5-4 to the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday, the first time they lost in OT since Dec. 19, 2019 (5-4 at the Vancouver Canucks).

11. Nashville Predators (21-11-2)

Total points: 86
Last week: No. 11
The Predators are 13-0-0 in games they lead entering the second period, most in the NHL without a loss of any kind (Colorado and the Boston Bruins are each 12-0-0; Carolina is 14-1-0).

12. Minnesota Wild (19-10-2)

Total points: 66
Last week: No. 8
The Wild have lost five in a row since Dec. 11. Goalie Cam Talbot is out indefinitely with a lower-body injury sustained during the Winter Classic. Defenseman Jared Spurgeon (lower body) and forward Joel Eriksson Ek (upper body) are out. Forward Jordan Greenway is in NHL COVID-19 protocol.

13. Calgary Flames (17-8-6)

Total points: 63
Last week: No. 12
Johnny Gaudreau has scored eight points (four goals, four assists) in his past four games. The forward has a point in 11 consecutive road games since Nov. 16 (nine goals, nine assists).

14. Anaheim Ducks (18-11-7)

Total points: 39
Last week: No. 14
The Ducks are 7-for-18 on the power play (38.9 percent) in six games since Dec. 15. The goals have been scored by six players, with forward Troy Terry scoring two. The others were scored by forwards Ryan Getzlaf and Sonny Milano, and defensemen Kevin Shattenkirk, Hampus Lindholm and Cam Fowler.

15. Boston Bruins (17-10-2)

Total points: 31
Last week: No. 16
The Bruins have won three in a row, scoring 14 goals despite going 0-for-8 on the power play, since returning from the holiday break. It's the second time they've had a three-game winning streak this season (Nov. 13-20).

16. Winnipeg Jets (16-11-5)

Total points: 11
Last week: NR
The Jets have won three straight games and scored at least one power-play goal in eight of 10, going 10-for-35 (28.6 percent) since Dec. 3. They were 2-for-34 (5.9 percent) in 12 games from Nov. 6-29.
