Coyle tied the game 1-1 with 54.9 seconds left in the period when he took a pass from Nino Niederreiter and beat Gustavsson for his ninth goal of the season.
"I thought we found a way to get a point on an ugly night and they found a way to get two points on an ugly night," Oilers coach Todd McLellan said. "It wasn't the most entertaining game and I think that happens when the schedule takes its toll on not only our team, but other teams. For us to scratch and claw and get a point, I don't want to say we're satisfied, but it was good to get that. I didn't think we had the energy level and polish that we needed to beat a good defensive team tonight."
Oilers captain Connor McDavid left the game in the second period because of the NHL's concussion protocol when his face hit the ice after being tripped by Wild defenseman Jared Spurgeon. He returned in the third period and had an excellent chance to give the Oilers the lead with 3:16 left on a 2-on-1 rush with Leon Draisaitl.
"They played tight-checking, they seemed to be all over the ice," McDavid said. "They had some good jump. We definitely had our chances, but our power play let us down again. That seems to be the story when we lose. It was still a good, hard-fought game."
Prior to Koivu's goal, Gustavsson poke-checked the puck away from Wild forward Zach Parise on a similar opportunity in overtime.
"I didn't think he [Koivu] had that much room to go into the middle, so I thought I would cut the angle off with the poke-check, but he made a good move and was able to go around the stick there," Gustavsson said. "Looking back at it, you think you shouldn't have poke-checked and stayed more patient, but you make a quick decision in the game and sometimes they beat you."
