EDMONTON - J.T. Compher scored 2:28 into overtime and the Colorado Avalanche defeated the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 at Rogers Place on Thursday.

Nikita Zadorov, Samuel Girard and Blake Comeau scored, and Jonathan Bernier made 29 saves for Colorado (28-18-4), which had lost three in a row (0-2-1).
"I thought we played well most of the game. It was unfortunate to lose the lead in the third," Compher said. "I thought we played well enough to finish it off, but getting that extra point in overtime is huge with the playoff race on."

Connor McDavid had two goals, Drake Caggiula scored, and Al Montoya made 27 saves for Edmonton (22-24-4). It was Montoya's first start for the Oilers since being acquired from the Montreal Canadiens on Jan. 4.
"We haven't played a game in a week and they've already played one (after the NHL All-Star break)," Caggiula said. "We battled our way back. I thought we had a pretty good start to the game. I don't know if it was just fatigue or rust or whatever it was, but we had a bit of a lull through the middle part of the game. But once the third period came around, we pushed and pushed and right until the bitter end there, we tied it up late."
Zadorov scored at 3:04 of the second period to give Colorado a 1-0 lead. He intercepted a clearing attempt by Oilers defenseman Andrej Sekera along the right boards, cut to the middle, and shot it over the blocker of Montoya.
"It is nice to get a win after losing three in a row," Zadorov said. "We have gotten three of the four points on this road trip so far, so it has been a good trip for us."
Girard scored on the power play at 7:52 to make it 2-0 with a shot from the point. The goal was Girard's first with Colorado.

McDavid scored at 9:11 to make it 2-1, batting a rebound from his initial shot over Bernier's shoulder into the net.
Caggiula appeared to make it 2-2 at 19:02, but Avalanche coach Jared Bednar challenged for goaltender interference, and the goal was overturned after video review.
Comeau scored shorthanded with 29 seconds left in the second to give Colorado a 3-1 lead.
"It was a big win for us," Bednar said. "We had a real good second and built a lead and they had a strong push in the third period, but I thought we did a nice job. For the most part, I really liked what a lot of our guys did tonight. Good competitiveness and guys chipping in all over the place."
Caggiula scored at 6:52 of the third period to make it 3-2. Matt Benning's shot from the point deflected off Caggiula's torso and under Bernier's arm.
McDavid tied the game with 27 seconds left on a rebound off the end boards to make it 3-3.
"We had chances, they had chances. It was like any other overtime," McDavid said. "That's the point of 3-on-3. It's whoever scores on their chance first and they did."

They said it

"Special teams on the road haven't been good for us, but they were great tonight. Our penalty kill got a shorthanded goal, our power play got a goal, and that ends up being the difference in the hockey game." -- Avalanche coach Jared Bednar
"That's our leader. He's got to provide it all over the rink, offensively and defensively, and the rest of the group has to follow. He provided us with two goals tonight. When your leader does that you have a chance at success."-- Oilers coach Todd McLellan on Connor McDavid
