Andreas Athanasiou signed a two-year, $8.5 million contract with the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday. It has an average annual value of $4.25 million.

The 28-year-old forward had 40 points (20 goals, 20 assists) in 81 games for the Blackhawks this season. He could have become an unrestricted free agent July 1.

Chicago (26-49-7) finished 15th in the Western Conference this season and won the No. 1 pick at the NHL Draft Lottery on May 8. The 2023 Upper Deck NHL Draft will be held June 28-29 at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.

Selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the fourth round (No. 110) of the 2012 NHL Draft, Athanasiou has 236 points (125 goals, 111 assists) in 459 regular-season games for the Blackhawks, Los Angeles Kings, Edmonton Oilers and Red Wings, and two goals in 15 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
