"I was planning the first [goal] to happen Monday afternoon," Ristolainen said, "but I'll take it one game earlier."
Sabres center Jack Eichel scored twice, including the game-tying, power-play goal at 11:04 of the third period.
Jacob Josefson, who spent the past seven seasons with the Devils before signing as a free agent with the Sabres on July 1 scored and Robin Lehner made 35 saves.

The Sabres won for the second time when trailing after two periods (2-17-2) and the second time in overtime (2-7) this season. They have points in three of their past four games (2-1-1) and in eight of their past 11 (4-3-4).
"This is a huge win for us," Eichel said. "It feels good. That's a really good hockey team. I think they were on a five-game win streak. [Cory] Schneider has been playing great. They've got a lot of forwards making plays. It's a really good win. We're down a goal on the road in the third period and we find a way to come back and get two points. Hats off to us."
The Devils (22-9-6), who had a five-game winning streak end, extended their point streak to eight games (6-0-2). Miles Wood, Marcus Johansson and John Moore scored. Schneider made 25 saves.

"We had them on the ropes there even though the score didn't realty show that," Devils left wing Taylor Hall said. "They came in the third period and had a really good push. You can play a team at the top of the standings and they can lay an egg. You can play a team at the bottom and they give you one of the hardest games of the year. We're not in any position to take teams lightly and any point we get is pretty huge."
Eichel tied the game at 3-3 with a one-timer from the left circle off a cross-circle pass from Kyle Okposo.
The Devils appeared to take a 4-3 lead 77 seconds later when Hall beat Lehner on a breakaway. However, the goal was negated by a successful coach's challenge for offside from Sabres coach Phil Housley, who credited video coach Mat Myers for spotting the offside.
"I was thinking he didn't have possession, but when I looked at it again, he was onside until he lifted his skate," Housley said. "A great call by Mat to send it in and to challenge it. It was a big turning point in the game."
Hall said he thought he might have been offside when he was on the breakaway.
"In my head, I was trying to keep my foot down onside as long as possible but I also wanted to get some separation for a breakaway," Hall said. "That's the nature of the game. That's why the rule is there. If we're on the other side of that, you want the right call."
New Jersey took a 3-1 lead in the second on goals from Johansson on the power play at 8:34 and Moore at 14:55.

Eichel made it 3-2 on a deflection of Jake McCabe's shot from the left point, with 1:55 to play in the second.
New Jersey took a 1-0 lead at 13:35 of the first period on Wood's 10th goal. Josefson scored on a breakaway at 5:27 of the second to tie the game at 1-1.
"The guys responded in the right way," Housley said. "It easily could have gone in another direction, but they found a way and their determination proved that."
