The Tampa Bay Lightning held their first playoff on-ice training session Thursday at the TGH Ice Plex in preparation for a First Round series versus the Florida Panthers, the first time ever the two in-state rivals will meet in the postseason.
For the Lightning, who was available for the practice was a welcome sight.
Mainly because, for their most part, their entire team was on the ice and participating.

The Lightning opened practice with special teams work, and the top unit had all of its weapons at its disposal. Steven Stamkos was back in the left circle cranking one-timers. Nikita Kucherov was directing traffic from the right circle. Victor Hedman, who missed the final two regular season games with a lower-body injury, was quarterbacking from the point. Brayden Point (bumper) and Alex Killorn (goal line) rounded out power-play one.
Kucherov and Stamkos haven't skated on a power play together in a game since February 25, 2020 in Toronto.

Stamkos suffered a lower-body injury in the third period of a game April 8 at Columbus and sat out the final 16 games of the regular season. He returned to skating with his teammates for the first time May 4 and said at that time he saw "the light at the end of the tunnel" with regards to his injury and rehab and was confident he would be able to return once the postseason began.
Kucherov missed the entire regular season after having hip surgery December 29. Lightning general manager Julien BriseBois and head coach Jon Cooper have maintained throughout his rehab Kucherov was right on track to return when the playoffs begin.
Stamkos' and Kucherov's participation Thursday would seem to indicate both are in a position to play when the puck drops on Game 1 Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at Florida's BB&T Center.
Asked directly if Stamkos and Kucherov would be in the lineup for Game 1, provided everything goes according to plan between now and Sunday, Cooper responded, "We hope so."
"They're looking good right now," he elaborated. "Signs are pointing to them being in the lineup. Hope they will be."
With the top power play at full strength, the second unit consisted of Mikhail Sergachev quarterbacking Yanni Gourde, Ondrej Palat, Anthony Cirelli and Pat Maroon.
Palat sat out the final game of the regular season Monday at Florida with a lower-body injury, but it would appear his absence was more precautionary in nature.
With most everyone participating the Lightning lines were as follows:
- Ondrej Palat | Brayden Point | Nikita Kucherov
- Alex Killorn | Anthony Cirelli | Steven Stamkos
- Ross Colton | Yanni Gourde | Blake Coleman
- Pat Maroon | Tyler Johnson | Mathieu Joseph
Defensive pairings looked like this:
- Victor Hedman | Jan Rutta
- Ryan McDonagh | Erik Cernak
- Mikhail Sergachev | David Savard
- Luke Schenn | Cal Foote
The inclusion of Kucherov and Stamkos on the top lines is another good sign they'll be ready for the start of the Lightning-Panthers series. In previous practices, those two had been skating with scratches and taxi squad members when rolling line combinations.

"Very excited with those guys coming back, Stamkos and Kucherov," said McDonagh, who also missed the final two games with an upper-body injury but was a full participant Thursday. "They've worked extremely hard to be as prepared as they can. I think they're just anxious to get out there, help us in certain situations all over the ice and, especially for Kucherov's sake, he hasn't played hockey in a long time. That guy's passion for the game is pretty incredible. We're anxious to have them back here and thankful we get a few days here to really get some good team practices in and work on some different things. In the end, those guys are elite players and know what they need to do, and they've been working hard on their own to get prepared for hopefully a long playoff run."
The only absence from Thursday's practice was Barclay Goodrow, who suffered an upper-body injury in the penultimate regular season game May 8. Goodrow is out indefinitely, and it seems the Lightning are planning on not having him for at least the start of the postseason.
"There's been a plan all along for guys," Hedman said. "Whoever's going to get the nod to start the first game's got to be ready to go. I can only talk for myself, but it's exciting to be out there and see everyone pretty much ready to go except Barclay. Guys are eager to get going and we had some really good pace today during special teams practice and when everyone was going together. It's exciting times, and obviously we have that feeling of last season with us too. We have a big group that went through that together, so we know what it takes and we know what we need to do come playoff time. Everything is set aside, it's about the team and we've got to play the right way. The coaches have done a good job of putting together the pre-scouts on our opponent, where we can exploit them, what we can and cannot do. We're super excited."
