Playing in the final game of a five-game road trip, the second half of a back-to-back and their fifth contest in the last eight days, the Lightning knew this would be a challenging contest against Arizona. Ideally, a team in this situation gets an early lead and avoids having to play from behind. That didn't happen for the Lightning. Arizona jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead and pulled away even more in the final 40 minutes.

Despite getting outscored by three goals in the first, the Lightning did generate some excellent looks in the opening frame. But goalie Antti Raanta stopped all 11 of the Ligthning's first period shots. At the other end, Arizona converted on three of its first five shots.
Down by multiple goals after one period made for tough sledding. The Lightning weren't able to maintain some of the tight coverage they had displayed earlier in the trip. After they grabbed the early lead, the Coyotes generated numerous chances off the rush. They converted on a handful of them, including two during shorthanded situations.
Games and results like these can happen to all teams. The lopsided loss, however, doesn't take away from the overall success of the Lightning's road trip. They earned seven out of a possible 10 points.
