The Sixteen: Golden Knights Outscore Oilers in Game 1

After defeating the Winnipeg Jets in five games, the Vegas Golden Knights were set to take on a powerful division rival - the Edmonton Oilers. It was no secret that this was going to be a tough task, considering Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl posted a combined 281 points in the regular season.

Edmonton's power play dominated against Los Angeles in the first round and it led the majority of NHL analysts to pick the Oilers to beat the Golden Knights. Vegas set out to prove they could keep pace with Edmonton's offense in Game 1.

Draisaitl scored four minutes into the game on the power play to get Edmonton started in the first game of the series. Vegas found itself down 1-0 early before Ivan Barbashev's quick response came less than one minute after the opening goal. Michael Amadio and Mark Stone both notched goals afterwards, putting the Golden Knights up 3-1. Draisaitl once again found the back of the net with 11 seconds remaining in the first period, cutting Vegas' lead to 3-2.

After a scoreless second period, Draisaitl scored yet another power-play goal to tie the game, 3-3. Again, the Golden Knights responded with two quick goals from Barbashev and Chandler Stephenson, bringing the score to 5-3. About five minutes after Stephenson's goal, Draisaitl netted his fourth - yes, his fourth - goal of the game, and Edmonton found itself within one. Jack Eichel's empty-net goal put a cap on the evening, though, as Vegas snagged the 6-4 victory despite Draisaitl's commanding four-goal performance.

"We stuck to our plan and we got a huge win," said Barbashev after his two-goal game. "I score more goals when I'm in front of the net and that's what happened today."

Bruce Cassidy was impressed at his team's ability to overcome Draisaitl's offensive outburst.

"We used our six [defensemen], we used our four lines," Cassidy said. "I thought we were good. We're aware of their top guys and the damage they can do, but we like our team. We feel that if our team plays well, we can have success."
