Mike Morreale Speak of the Devils podcast

Devils All-Star center Jack Hughes certainly put on a show in Las Vegas this past weekend. Whether it was magic trick breakaways with "Little Jack Hughes" or leading the Metro to a victory in the tournament with some goals, you could see that he is a star in the making (if not already).
"You always anticipate something is going to happen with the puck on his stick," said NHL.com and Devils beat reporter Mike Morreale on the Speak of the Devils podcast. "From what Dan Marr told me, the NHL Director of Central Scouting, when they ranked Hughes No. 1 in the 2019 draft, they said the sky is the limit for Jack Hughes and what his potential will bring. I talked to Dan recently a week ago and he said that projection is still going up."
Hughes' stock is rising, while the rest of the team is in a crossroads after dealing with COVID-19 and unexpected injuries, including to forward Miles Wood and in goal. But Morreale has seen this team develop some character.
"It's a team that never really quits. That's a testament to how head coach Lindy Ruff has these guys thinking," he said. "The talent is here. It's just a matter of those guys learning how to win those big games, and coming up big in special moments. A lot of the elite players on this team are still young, they're still learning, they're still going through that phase of 'what I need to do to have an impact' - not just individually in big moments, but as a teammate. That takes time to gel with other members of the club. But they're learning that this year. I do think it'll pay dividends down the road.
"Overall, big picture, midway point of the season here, I do like what I see from the Devils. It's just a matter of consistency and playing the game the right way, each game."
