PRE-GAME STORY

NEWARK, N.J.- Devils head coach Lindy Ruff met with the media two hours prior to puck drop and he had several lineup updates.
Forward Ondrej Palat (groin) will return to the lineup after missing 32 games. He scored three goals in the six games he has played.
Goaltender Akira Schmid has been recalled from the American Hockey League. Mackenzie Blackwood took a shot off the hand in Wednesday's morning skate in Detroit and is being held out as a precaution.
Forward Tyce Thompson was re-assigned to Utica of the American Hockey League.
Palin' Around
Lindy Ruff was excited about the prospect of Palat's return.
"In Palat's absence we've had a lot of players step up and lead the charge," Ruff said. "You always anticipate that the first game back can be good, but sometimes it takes a little bit to get back into the grind. We'll judge it shift by shift, and we'll look at where he's at, at the end of the period. We'll base that on how much he's going to play.
"His whole career he's been a great secondary scorer. He's led the charge. In the previous team he played for he scored a lot of important goals."

Holtz My Beer
Forward Alexander Holtz picked up his first career multi-point game against Detroit with a goal and an assist. It's no coincidence that Holtz's three highest ice time games are the game in which he scored.
"The better you play in a game the more you play is usually how it works," Ruff said. "Last night was an opportunity when the score went up to add some ice time to his game and get him a little more comfortable.
Singing the Blues
Ruff on the Blues: "They're getting a lot of pucks to the net. They've got good speed with some of their players. That back end with (Colton) Parayko, they can one-time a lot of pucks, get a lot of traffic around the net, they're forechecking real hard."
