Boston tied an NHL record with its 62nd win of the season after defeated the Devils, 2-1, Saturday night at TD Garden.
Former Devil Pavel Zacha scored both goals for Boston, who tied the 1995-96 Detroit Red Wings and 2018-19 Tampa Bay Lightning.
Jesper Bratt had the lone goal for New Jersey.
"It was a good test. We played a good team," Bratt said. "We had some good looks and some good chances. We stuck with it. We just couldn't capitalize on our chances and get a little bit more of a game going.
"We came back and we played strong. At the same time we didn't play fast enough in our D zone. We got stuck a lot on their forecheck. It's something we have to work on."
The Devils missed a chance to jump Carolina for the top spot in the Metro Division. New Jersey is one point back but has played one more game than New Jersey. The Devils have a two-point lead on the New York Rangers for home-ice in the opening round with both teams having two games remaining.

Here are some observations from the game...
- Jack Hughes' inched another step forward in his quest for history. Hughes picked up an assist on New Jersey's opening goal for his 96th point of the season. That ties Patrik Elias (2000-01) for the single-season franchise record. Hughes has two more games to try and break the record for himself.

"That's one hell of an accomplishment when you look at it," head coach Lindy Ruff said. "He's put together one heck of a year. We've got a couple games left here and then we'll start the new season."

- Goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood started the game for the Devils. Things didn't start so well for the 6-foot-4, 225-pound netminder. He surrendered a goal just two minutes into the game. He allowed his second goal just five minutes into the game.

However, after that Blackwood began to settle into the game. He made a key save on Tyler Bertuzzi on an odd-man rush, moving laterally to his right and fighting off the shot with his elbow. His best stop(s) came when he denied David Pastrnak on a breakaway and on a follow-up shot attempt.
Blackwood made 20 saves in the first period to keep it a 2-1 game. He finished the night with 38 saves.
"I haven't played a lot of hockey this year. Injuries are hard, espeically when you miss five, six weeks in two clumps of the year, This is my third game since injury. I'm really finding my game again, feeling sharp and comfortable. I was happy that I felt better tonight."

- The Devils best chance to tie the game came when McAvoy took a four-minute double minor high sticking penalty, 3:45 of which carried over into the third period. But the Devils failed to convert.

"We need to be better," Ruff said. "They're a good penalty killing team. They have a couple veterans up front that do a good job. You know you have to execute. If you don't execute it's going down the ice. I felt we didn't spend a lot of time, our entries weren't clean enough. It allowed them to kill off that four minutes."

- Zacha struck twice against his former employer. The first with a tip goal on a shot from the point. The second came off a lucky back carom off the end boards where he alertly threw the puck toward the net and it deflected off Blackwood's own pad and through his legs. Both goals came in the opening 4:44 of the game (and 2:44 apart) to give Boston an early 2-0 lead to start the game.
