Smith scored 11:37 into the game for his first, extended his club's lead to 2-0. He scored again three minutes later to put the Chiefs up 3-1 and scored again for his first career hat trick in the latter half of the second period. He also scattered five assists through the night in his club's big 9-2 win over Seattle.
Smith, who was named CHL defenseman of the year last season when he had seven goals and 69 points in 57 games, is playing at that same pace again this year with 50 points through 41 games but has more than doubled his goal total to 15.
Devils drafted Smith 17th overall in the 2018 NHL Draft.
