COL@DET: Varlamov turns away Mantha with the blocker

DETROIT -- Semyon Varlamov made 24 saves and the Colorado Avalanche extended their point streak to 11 games with a 2-0 win against the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena on Sunday.

It's the longest point streak for the Avalanche since a 10-0-2 stretch from Feb. 27-March 25, 2007.
Nathan MacKinnon scored his seventh goal in eight games and Gabriel Landeskog had an empty-net goal in the final minute for Colorado (16-6-5).

"We're playing really well now and we feel like we're giving ourselves a chance to win every game," defenseman Ian Cole said. "I thought we did a really good job of limiting their chances tonight and when they got one, [Varlamov] took care of them."
Varlamov faced 13 shots in the first period. He made six saves in the second and five in the third.
"We knew they were really going to make a push in the third period, but our defense did a great job," said Varlamov, who picked up his 24th NHL career shutout and first of the season. "They were playing really smart hockey and taking away all of Detroit's speed."

Colorado, which hasn't lost in regulation since a 5-2 defeat against the Winnipeg Jets on Nov. 9, has won six straight on the road and is 9-0-2 during its point streak.
"We came out really sluggish in the first period; we looked like the team that played and traveled last night, but [Varlamov] kept us in the game," Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said. "We really flipped the script going into the second period and I liked the way we played from there."
Jonathan Bernier made 27 saves for Detroit (12-12-3), which won 4-2 at the Boston Bruins on Saturday. The Red Wings were outshot 22-11 over the final two periods.
"I don't think playing yesterday had anything to do with that," Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall said. "We just had too many turnovers that left us with too much time in our own zone for no reason."
The Red Wings were missing three of their top scorers in one stretch of the third period; Tyler Bertuzzi and Anthony Mantha were in the penalty box after fighting majors, and Dylan Larkin was in concussion protocol following a hit from Avalanche defenseman Patrik Nemeth.
"We were a little shorthanded there because we only dressed 11 forwards and lost three of them," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. "But the concussion protocol is there to protect the safety of the players, so you can't complain about them checking on [Larkin]."
The Avalanche took a 1-0 lead at 4:54 of the second period, six seconds after Jonathan Ericsson was called for holding. Landeskog passed to Mikko Rantanen at the side of the net, where he found MacKinnon in the slot for his 19th goal.

"That's probably the hottest line in the League, but we did a decent job against them," Kronwall said. "We just let them get off one set play on the power play, and it cost us."
Rantanen, who leads the NHL in assists (34) and points (45), has 15 points (four goals, 11 assists) in an eight-game point streak.
Mark Alt nearly extended Colorado's lead at 2:50 of the third period when he beat Bernier with a slap shot that struck the right goal post.
Varlamov stopped Bertuzzi from the edge of the crease with 1:15 remaining, and Landeskog scored into an empty net at 19:01.

They said it

"I like the way that we have established a physical side to our game in a smart way. We're not shying away from contact, but we're not running around trying to hit people. It is great to see us playing with that fire without taking bad penalties." -- Avalanche coach Jared Bednar
"They got one goal on the power play and one in the empty net, but I thought we did a good job against them when it was even strength. That's good to see because we've got some great teams with hot lines coming up on our schedule, starting with Tampa Bay in a couple days." -- Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill
