Five Fitness Stars Challenges

Our Goal

The goal of the Dallas Stars Hockey Club is to teach children the importance of healthy eating and keep them active through fun and unique physical activities. Childhood obesity has become an epidemic across our nation and we are committed to helping our schools fight the battle through promoting a healthy lifestyle. By joining us in the fight against childhood obesity, we can make a healthy lifestyle both enjoyable and easy to maintain for kids of all ages.

Program Details

Fitness Stars is a 5-10 week program dedicated to reinforcing the importance of a healthy lifestyle where students will participate in 5 Fitness Stars Challenges in their respective PE classes.

Fitness Stars is designed by Brad Jellis, Head Strength & Conditioning Coach for the Dallas Stars, and Bob Bassen, former Dallas Stars player and Director of the Alumni Association. The Dallas Stars will supply, with funding from the Dallas Stars Foundation, floorball equipment for every participating elementary school physical education class, along with physical fitness logs and charts for year-long display in elementary school gymnasiums. Select schools will have the option to receive visits by the Dallas Stars Street Squad and Dallas Stars alumni to talk about fitness and healthy eating habits.

Physical Education teachers will meet to participate in a training program with the Dallas Stars Street Squad. Teachers will learn how to properly and effectively teach floorball to each child, as well as pick up their equipment and Fitness Stars package at that time. Upon the start of the program in class, a Fitness Stars welcome video discussing the importance of staying active and fit, will be shown on the first day each semester to PE students. Expectations are then laid out on how to meet the 5 Fitness Stars Challenges.

Students will participate in 5 Fitness Stars Challenges, collecting a bracelet and a star charm as they complete physical fitness of healthy eating initiatives.

Strength - Complete 100 pushups (cumulative)

Cardio - Run 3 miles (cumulative)

Healthy Choices - Encourage famlies to try a healthy recipe at home. Student brings or emails a photo of their healthy meal for credit (emailed photo can be submitted to Dallas Stars to feature on our website, with appropriate photo approval from parent and school, if child can be seen)

Agility - Completes and shows grasp of 3 hockey drills

Cross-Training - Complete Fitness Gram

Students will be taught basic drills and begin working towards their goals for pushups and running. Once PE teacher agrees that the student shows basic understanding of the hockey drills, they receive a Fitness Star bracelet charm for that completed challenge.

The top reader from each participating class will earn a special Dallas Stars prize and the winning class, that has read the most, will earn special prizes. In addition to these prizes, the winning class will have an opportunity to take a field trip to a Dallas Stars practice to tell the players about the reading goals they accomplished! The Dallas Stars Foundation will also donate tickets to each participating teacher to bring their class to be recognized at a select Dallas Stars game at the American Airlines Center.

The Dallas Stars Foundation's goal is to work with teachers to encourage students to develop reading habits that they will practice throughout their lifetime and believe this program is a special way to do so. We have re-vamped this program to work seamlessly with teachers' lesson plans without adding any undue stress or additional work for them.

Happy reading and Go Stars!
