Detroit Red Wings forward Tomas Jurco could miss the start of the season after having back surgery last week, Mlive.com reported Wednesday. Jurco was injured in Slovakia while training.

"Not sure he'll be ready for camp," general manager Ken Holland told the website. "He needs 4-6 weeks of rest, then start slow. Need to see how he feels. ... Don't think he'll be on the ice playing in 4-6 weeks. Not sure he'll be ready to open the season. Won't know for another month down the road."
Jurco, 23, had four goals and six points in 44 games averaging 9:11 of ice time last season, and has 15 goals and 39 points in 143 games with Detroit. He did not appear in the Stanley Cup Playoffs when the Red Wings were eliminated in five games by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Eastern Conference First Round.
Jurco was expected to be in the mix for one of the final forward spots on the roster.
