LAK@SJS: Donato circles the net to score for 2-1 lead

Ryan Donato broke a tie in the third period, and Martin Jones made 41 saves for the San Jose Sharks in a 2-1 win against the Los Angeles Kings at SAP Center in San Jose on Monday.

Logan Couture scored his 14th goal for the Sharks (12-14-4), who won for the first time in five games (1-3-1).
"It's a big part of our schedule coming up here and we're not out of it, that's for sure," said Jones, who is 2-0-1 in his past three starts. "We'll see what happens over the next couple weeks, but it's definitely a good opportunity for us to bag some points and see where we're at."
Patrick Marleau of the Sharks played his 884th consecutive game to tie Steve Larmer for the fourth-longest streak in NHL history.
Matt Roy scored for the Kings (13-12-6), who were playing the second game of a back-to-back after defeating the Vegas Golden Knights 3-1 on Sunday. Jonathan Quick made 21 saves.
"I thought our group played well," Kings coach Todd McLellan said. "We didn't give up much. Both their goals go in off one of our players. Sometimes it's not your night and yet you put in a pretty good effort."

LAK@SJS: Couture scores a fortuitous goal in 1st

Los Angeles has gone 13 games without consecutive wins since the end of its season-long six-game winning streak (Feb. 11-24).
The teams play again in San Jose on Wednesday.
Donato came behind the net and put a sharp-angle backhand shot on goal that redirected in off Quick's skate to put the Sharks up 2-1 at 3:48 of the third period.
Donato played center for the first time this season, playing on the fourth line with John Leonard and Kurtis Gabriel, and has a three-game point streak (two goals, one assist).
The Kings had chances to tie the game late. Anze Kopitar hit the post with 3:09 to play. Sharks defenseman Mario Ferraro prevented Jeff Carter from shooting into an open net with less than 10 seconds remaining.
"It wasn't in waves but every now and then we'd get a good 'Grade A' opportunity and we just didn't find the net," McLellan said. "We hit a post, we had an open net at the end. Even with 0.2 seconds left we're staring at the goaltender and couldn't get the puck up."
Alex Iafallo could have put Los Angeles ahead 33 seconds into the third, but Jones made the pad save on his wrist shot from close range.
"I know he's been working hard at making the proper adjustments," Sharks coach Bob Boughner said. "For me, I'm not a goalie guy but it's getting the save you need at the right time in the game, and he did that."
Couture gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead at 8:22 of the first period. Couture's shot from distance was saved by Quick but deflected in off Kings defenseman Kurtis MacDermid.
Couture ended a six-game scoring drought, his longest of the season.
"It was a lucky bounce," Couture said. "Things just haven't been going in for me lately and I'm counted on to score so it was a big sigh of relief to see it go in. Just figured I'd start throwing pucks at the net. It was nice to see it go in."
Roy tied it 1-1 on a shot from the right point at 17:31 of the second period. It was Roy's first goal of the season and came one day after he signed a three-year, $9.45 million contract on Sunday.
"I think any shot on net is a good shot really," Roy said. "A lot of times from the blue line we're just trying to get through and look through a tip or shoot it off of his pad and create a rebound or something."
NOTES:Marleau played in his 1,753th NHL game and is three from tying Mark Messier (1,756) for second-most in NHL history. … Couture's 12 even-strength goals are second-most in the Honda West Division; Colorado Avalanche forward Mikko Rantanen has 13. … The Kings were 0-for-5 on the power play. They were 4-for-10 in their first two games against the Sharks. … Los Angeles is 2-1-1 in the second game of a back-to-back.
