In their last two games against teams that are well out of playoff contention, the Lightning built an early multi-goal lead, but couldn't maintain it. While they did ultimately prevail against both the Kings and Rangers, they weren't able to close out either contest in regulation. Tonight, however, the Lightning didn't allow Ottawa to rally. The Lightning extended a 2-1 first period lead to 4-1 after 40 minutes. Then, they dominated the early minutes of the third and added a fifth goal, effectively putting the game away.
Still, this was far from a complete performance for the Lightning. As has been the case in recent games, they struggled at times with their puck management. That led to a number of turnovers, which fed Ottawa's attack. The Sens had several odd-man rushes, including a two-on-one that resulted in Anthony Duclair's first period goal. Other turnovers occurred in the Lightning's defensive zone - those allowed the Senators to regain possession and apply pressure. Fortunately for the Lightning, Andrei Vasilevskiy was, as usual, on his game. In recording his 30th win of the season, he made a handful of excellent saves, including a stop on Bobby Ryan's second period penalty shot.
So the Lightning will try to sharpen their game and rediscover the tight team defense that was on display throughout most of February. They'll need to be ready when the talented Winnipeg Jets visit on Tuesday.
