NYPD Police Officer Thomas Mitchell is the Community Hero of the Month supported by Northwell for January.
Mitchell has been an Islanders fan for as long as his family can remember, and he truly adores what the team stands for, as well as the positive impact they have on the community.
Twenty years ago, in 2005, Thomas sustained an injury in the line of duty while working as an NYPD police officer for the 101st Precinct that resulted in him becoming a quadriplegic. Since his life-altering injury, Thomas has continued to work with the NYPD by educating fellow officers on partner safety, delivering speeches across all five boroughs. His speeches emphasize the importance of returning home safely to their families after every call and the need to remain vigilant at all times while on duty.
Being able to interact with young individuals of the NYPD has been a tremendous honor for Mitchell and he looks forward to his weekly speeches. In addition, he has become an active member of a police support group dedicated to uplifting fellow officers who have been injured. Thomas has also been blessed to be part of a Tunnel to Towers recipient family, supporting the foundation and standing alongside other families who have experienced catastrophic injuries.
Mitchell has never stopped giving 110% to his work, as his primary reason for joining the NYPD was to do what he loves most—helping others. His courage, bravery, and selflessness in service to both his job and the community have been incredibly inspiring to his family.
The Islanders have played a meaningful role in his recovery, from watching games in his hospital bed to now being able to attend games UBS Arena. Mitchell's dedication, service, and unwavering commitment have been a true blessing to his family, and Tuesday's recognition is the ultimate honor for him.
