For much of the past three decades, this has been largely true.
But now, after careful consideration from Las Vegas general manager George McPhee, the 55-year-old former Wheat Kings coach, general manager and owner is the new assistant general manager of Las Vegas's NHL team.

Here are six fun facts about McCrimmon to help you get to know him better.

1. McCrimmon had been serving as the head coach, general manager and owner of the Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings.

The WHL is a junior league based in Canada that is part of the larger Canadian Hockey League. The CHL is Canada's primary development system for ages 16-20, and develops more NHL players than any league in the world.

2. McCrimmon had been with the Wheat Kings (based in his hometown, Brandon, Manitoba) since 1988-89.

Since 1992-93, the Wheat Kings have won more games than any CHL team, and were the WHL champions in 2015-16. There are currently 60 CHL teams.

3. Had held a variety of roles in Brandon since the late 1980s.

McCrimmon has had a hand in the development of NHL players Brayden Schenn (Philadelphia), Mark Stone (Ottawa), Ryan Pulock (NY Islanders), Eric Fehr (Pittsburgh) and Jordin Tootoo (Chicago). Retired NHL players to have gone through Brandon during McCrimmon's tenure include Wade Redden, Bryan McCabe and Chris Osgood.

4. With this resume and longstanding status in the CHL, McCrimmon is seen as one of the most connected men in Canadian hockey.

McCrimmon is especially connected when it comes to being familiar with young prospects that will be NHL Draft eligible in the next few years.

5. McCrimmon never skated in the NHL, but played junior hockey with Brandon and then at the University of Michigan before moving into management in his mid-20s.

6. His older brother, Brad McCrimmon, was a teammate of #VegasIsHockey Special Adviser Murray Craven for three seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1980s.
