The Capitals conclude their four-game road trip tonight against the Anaheim Ducks at Honda Center. The Capitals enter tonight’s game on a season-long six-game winning streak. Alex Ovechkin (2g-0a–2p) and Ryan Leonard (2g-2a–4p) each scored twice in the Capitals’ 7-1 win over the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday. Per OptaSTATS, the Capitals became the first team in NHL history to get multi-goal games from a player 40 or older and a player 20 or younger in the same game. Ovechkin (4g-5a–9p in 6 GP) and Leonard (2g-5a–7p in 4 GP) both bring point streaks into tonight’s contest.
Leonard’s four points on Wednesday marked a career high. He became the seventh player in franchise history to record a four-point game at age 20 or younger, joining Nicklas Backstrom (five times, last: Nov. 15, 2008), Alex Ovechkin (two times, last: Dec. 22, 2005, Jaroslav Svekjkovsky (April 13, 1997), Chris Valentine (three times, last: Feb. 27, 1982), Bobby Carpenter (two times, last: Feb. 25, 1982) and Mike Gartner (three times, last: Oct. 19, 1980). In addition, Leonard became the only rookie in the NHL to record a four-point game this season.
Leonard, who has recorded 18 points (7g, 11a) in 28 games this season, ranks tied for first in game-winning goals (2), tied for third in goals and fourth in points among rookies.
Leonard leads Washington and ranks tied for fourth in the NHL in penalties drawn (15).
