Throughout the summer of 2023, we'll take a glance back at some of the Devils players and their 2022-23 season. We kick things off this summer with All-Star Jack Hughes.
NHL SEASON:4th. Overall, 4th with New Jersey
2022-23 STATS:78GP, 43G, 56A, 99PTS, +10
LOOKING BACK:Jack Hughes had a season like no other in Devils history. Literally. He set a franchise record with 99 points on the year (besting the previous mark of 96 set by Patrik Elias in 2000-01). Hughes broke the record by scoring his 43rd goal of the year (97th point) in the final home game of the regular season. If he hadn't missed four games with an injury, Hughes would have likely broken the 100-point barrier.
He also set career highs across the board in games played, goals, assists and points. Hughes posted his first career hat trick, Nov. 26 vs. Washington, and was named to participate in his second straight NHL All-Star Game.
NOTEWORTHY:Hughes was named a finalist for the Lady Byng Award, which goes to the "player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability." Hughes finished the season with just six penalty minutes (gentlemanly conduct) to go with 43 goals and 99 points (high standard of play).
QUOTE 'EM:"Even at the Program (United States National Team Development Program), I never scored 43 goals and I was lighting the lamp there. I think that was impressive, getting hot in that stretch in January, February. Coming into the league I think everyone knew about my playmaking, but I don't know if people expected me to score 40, and maybe not this fast."
