The proceeds will be used by the Baltimore City Fire in its mission to provide financial support to the families of any Baltimore City firefighter or paramedic who suffer a serious injury or death while still an active member of the department. The Hath's Heroes shop proceeds have been allocated to families of firefighters Lt. Paul Butrim, Kelsey Sadler and Kenny Lacayo and to firefighter John McMaster. Butrim, Sadler and Lacayo died in a Baltimore rowhouse fire in January, while McMaster was seriously injured.
Hath's Heroes was founded by the Hathaways to support first responders in the Washington, D.C. region. A co-branded Capitals and Hath's Heroes T-Shirt, hoodie, hat and tumbler were available for purchase in the spring shop.
"Our thoughts are with the family members of those who bravely served as Baltimore City firefighters earlier this year," said Garnet Hathaway. "Hopefully these funds can, in some small way, help the families who have suffered great loss and injury. We are constantly in awe of the bravery and selflessness that first responders demonstrate, and the courage that their families possess to support them on the front line. These funds are possible because of our community coming together and our mutual respect for our first responders. These men and women were our neighbors, and I hope their families know that their community will continue to support them."
The Hathaways founded Hath's Heroes in 2019. Garnet's great-grandfather, Garnet Mcelroy, was a firefighter in Winnipeg, and his experiences inspired the Hathaways to launch Hath's Heroes.
Last season Hath's Heroes launched a first-of-its-kind collaboration with the nonprofit
Mindful Junkie
to provide mindfulness training to D.C. area first responders. Through the partnership, Hath's Heroes funded multiple Mindful Junkie seminars led by Mindful Junkie founder Gina Rollo White. The trainings were made available to all firefighters within DC Fire and EMS and delivered Tactical Brain Training® (TBT), which empowers first responders to better handle work-based trauma.
In addition, Hath's Heroes provided thousands of meals to first responders and families affiliated with area nonprofits during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Hathaways also provide tickets to select Capitals games to local first responders.
