Utah Hockey Club announced today that the team has claimed defenseman Dakota Mermis off waivers from the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The 30-year-old defenseman has recorded one assist and six penalty minutes (PIM) in three American Hockey League (AHL) games with the Toronto Marlies this season.
Mermis has played parts of seven NHL seasons with the Arizona Coyotes, New Jersey Devils and Minnesota Wild since 2017-18, earning 4-8-12 and 37 PIM in 74 career games. He most recently skated in 47 NHL contests with the Wild last season, registering 3-5-8 and 33 PIM.
The 6-foot, 194-pound defenseman has tallied 21-119-140 and 427 PIM in 434 career AHL games with the Marlies, Iowa Wild, Binghamton Devils, Tucson Roadrunners and Springfield Falcons. He has worn a letter in six of his past seven AHL seasons, serving as captain for Tucson (2018-19) and Iowa (2023-24).
The native of Alton, Illinois, has won two Ontario Hockey League (OHL) titles with the London Knights (2012-13) and Oshawa Generals (2014-15), leading the Generals to their fifth Memorial Cup title as Canadian Hockey League champions. He also helped the Green Bay Gamblers to their fourth United States Hockey League (USHL) championship in 2011-12.
