Mark Jankowski and TJ Brodie scored for Calgary (34-15-5), which lost for the third time in the past 12 games.
"I still think we have a better game to show, and we didn't show it tonight," Flames forward Sean Monahan said.
Mike Smith made 21 saves on 24 shots for the Flames after entering the game at 13:42 of the first period in relief of David Rittich, who allowed two goals on six shots.
"I felt all right and I was ready to go," Rittich said. "It just happened what happened."
San Jose scored three goals on three shots in 1:25 to take a 3-1 lead after Jankowski put Calgary up 1-0 at 4:36.

SJS@CGY: Burns cashes in on Rittich's misplay

Kane tied it 1-1 at 12:39 with a spinning shot from the right face-off circle.
Burns made it 2-1 at 13:42 when he blocked Rittich's clearing attempt above the right circle and scored into the open net.
Hertl deflected the first shot Smith faced to put the Sharks up 3-1 at 14:04. Hertl has eight points (five goals, three assists) in the past four games.
"We thought we'd compete hard and see what happens, see how the game develops," Sharks captain Joe Pavelski said. "It was nice getting the lead and kind of answering. They scored early, and we answered, getting back into that game and playing with the lead."
Kane scored on his own rebound to make it 4-1 at 16:27 of the second period. It was his ninth goal in five games against the Flames since joining the Sharks in a trade from the Buffalo Sabres on Feb. 26, 2018.
"He's been so dominant against these guys at times," Pavelski said. "It's good to see. When you've got a player that's hot against a team, it's good to see him stay hot and give our team a little boost. He did a good job."
Brodie cut the San Jose lead to 4-2 1:15 later with a point shot through traffic on the power play at 17:42.

Jones dove across his crease to get his paddle on Johnny Gaudreau's shot at 13:01 of the third period and made a glove save on Rasmus Andersson at 14:15. Each save came with the Flames on the power play after Jones was called for tripping Gaudreau at 12:35.
The Sharks penalty kill was 6-for-7.
"He was great on the PK," Kane said of Jones. "They had a lot of traffic and bodies in front of our crease, and he did a great job standing tall. Another big reason we were able to come out with the victory tonight."
Hertl scored on the power play at 18:37 for the 5-2 final.

They said it

"We know where they are, and they know where we are. It's going to be a fight right to the finish to see who is going to get first in the division. It's a good step for us to be where we are. We've still got to hunt them down though. Lots of hockey left." -- Sharks center Joe Thornton
"I don't think we had a great start. We turned pucks over, and that's when they create their chances and they did that and they capitalized. So we were chasing the game from the start." -- Flames forward Sean Monahan
