TORONTO -- Team North America defeated Team Sweden 4-3 in overtime on Wednesday in the final World Cup of Hockey 2016 preliminary game for each team.
Team Sweden (2-0-1) won Group B and will advance to the semifinal; Team North America (2-1-0) will reach the semifinal if Team Russia is defeated by Team Finland on Thursday (3 p.m. ET; ESPN, SN, TVA Sports).
Here are the three stars of the game as selected by members of the World Cup of Hockey 2016 Organizing Committee:
3rd star - Johnny Gaudreau, F, Team North America
GOAL, ASSIST, 6 SHOTS, 18:29 TOI
Electrified the crowd at Air Canada Centre every time he touched the puck. Gave Team North America a 3-1 lead when he scored at 13:57 of first period. Gaudreau shot wide on a penalty shot 56 seconds into the game.
2nd star - Henrik Lundqvist, G, Team Sweden
45 SAVES
Survived early barrage to keep Team Sweden in the game. Twice robbed Nathan MacKinnon from close range in the second period and did the same against Ryan Murray in the third. "He kept us in the game, he gave us a chance to win," Team Sweden coach Rikard Gronborg said.
1st star - Nathan MacKinnon, F, Team North America
GOAL, 6 SHOTS, 18:21 TOI
Capped the most exciting game of the World Cup with the game-winning goal 4:11 into overtime. After being denied five times by Lundqvist earlier in the game, MacKinnon skated in alone, avoided an attempted poke check by the Team Sweden goalie and backhanded it over his outstretched right pad.
