BOSTON --Jack Hughes and Alexander Holtz each had a goal and an assist for the New Jersey Devils in a 5-3 win against the Boston Bruins at TD Garden on Saturday.
Mackenzie Blackwood made 15 saves on 16 shots before Vitek Vanecek entered halfway through to make 12 saves for New Jersey, which finished the preseason 5-2-0. Linus Ullmark made 22 saves for Boston, which went 3-3-0. Holtz scored from the slot after a drop pass from Hughes at 18:10 of the first period to give the Devils a 1-0 lead. David Pastrnak scored for the Bruins on a shot from the left circle at 7:59 of the second period to tie it 1-1, but Dawson Mercer tipped in a Dougie Hamilton shot at 11:44 to give New Jersey a 2-1 lead. Hughes scored in front after a pass from Holtz from behind the net 1:30 into the third period to make it 3-1 Devils, and Yegor Sharangovich scored from the right circle after a turnover at 2:59 to make it 4-1. Jakub Lauko scored at 14:15 to pull the Bruins within 4-2, and Patrice Bergeron scored his first of the preseason at 17:14 to make it 4-3. Tomas Tatar scored into the empty net with 18 seconds left for the 5-3 final.
