Ovi's hatty, DeSmith, OT winners highlight Friday

Alex Ovechkin's second straight hat trick helped the Washington Capitals become part of a historic day in the NHL on Friday.

The Capitals forward scored his 22nd NHL hat trick to help Washington defeat the Carolina Hurricanes
6-5 in overtime
after trailing 4-1 in the second period. The New Jersey Devils and Arizona Coyotes also won after trailing by three goals on Friday, marking the second time in NHL history at least three teams rallied for wins after trailing by three or more goals on the same day.
The only other time that occurred was Nov. 25, 1987, when the
Detroit Red Wings
,
Montreal Canadiens
,
Devils
and
Pittsburgh Penguins
each did so.
The Devils defeated the Vegas Golden Knights
5-4 in overtime
after trailing 3-0 after the first period and 4-2 after the second. The Coyotes defeated the New York Rangers
4-3 in overtime
despite trailing 3-0 in the second period and 3-1 after two.

ARI@NYR: Stepan wins it in overtime for Coyotes

The three three-goal comebacks continued a trend this season; 224 of the 494 games played (45.3 percent) have been won by a team that trailed by at least one goal. No season in NHL history has seen as many comeback victories in the first 500 games.
There have been 70 multigoal comeback wins, the most in the first 500 games of any season. Additionally, the Devils and Coyotes upped the number of third-period multigoal comebacks this season to 23, also the most within the first 500 games of any season.
Eleven games have been won by a team that trailed by three or more goals at any point. Six seasons in NHL history have had more within the first 500 games: 18 in 1985-86 and 1989-90; 15 in 1987-88; and 14 in 1983-84, 1984-85 and 1986-87.

Ovechkin comes up huge

Ovechkin became the 14th player in NHL history to score a hat trick in consecutive team games on multiple occasions in his career. Only Joe Malone (four) and Wayne Gretzky (three) have done it more than twice.
Ovechkin leads the NHL with 28 goals in 31 games this season. He is the 18th different player in the modern era (since 1943-44) to score 28 or more goals in his team's first 31 games and the third to do so since 1993-94. The others: Jaromir Jagr, who scored 28 goals in 31 games in 1995-96 and 30 in 31 games in 1996-97, each time for the Penguins, and Mario Lemieux, who scored 29 goals in 27 games for Pittsburgh in 1995-96.
Ovechkin also extended his point streak to 13 games to match an NHL career high set from Jan. 1-Feb. 1, 2007 (eight goals, 12 assists). He also pushed his goal streak to five games, two shy of matching his career high set as a rookie from Feb. 10-March 8, 2006.
