DET@CBJ: Domi buries game-winning goal in OT

COLUMBUS -- Max Domi scored with 21 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Columbus Blue Jackets a 5-4 win against the Detroit Red Wings at Nationwide Arena on Saturday.

Eric Robinson and Oliver Bjorkstrand each had a goal and an assist and Seth Jones had three assists for the Blue Jackets (18-26-12). Matiss Kivlenieks made 33 saves to win his first game since his NHL debut Jan. 19, 2020.
Columbus went 3-1-3 in its final seven games of the season.
"I'm glad they're able to leave the season, a horrible season, with a win," Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella said. "For the most part through the time that we were eliminated they played the right way, tried to keep the integrity and the dignity of the hockey for us.
"It was an overtime win, which is exciting for them. I'm proud of them. There's a lot of work to be done but I'm glad we ended at least winning a game."
Jakub Vrana had a goal and an assist and Dennis Cholowski had two assists for the Red Wings (19-27-10). Calvin Pickard made 31 saves in his first start since March 30.
Detroit was 3-2-3 in its final eight games.
"The arc of this organization is starting to head in the right direction and last year was a bad year, for sure," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. "This was totally different. We're a much, much improved hockey team from a season ago, both in how we play the game, in our habits, in our structure.
"With a number, especially down the stretch, of young players that are really being thrust into significant roles, to me, it's not even comparable [to last season]."
The Red Wings and Blue Jackets each finished with 48 points and a .429 points percentage in the eight-team Discover Central Division, but the Red Wings were seventh based on more regulation wins (19-18).
"Down the stretch there I was pretty proud how our team competed," Red Wings defenseman Danny DeKeyser said. "I think a lot of our younger players took strides this year. They're meant to be here. They're playing well. It's good to see that for the future. It gives you a positive outlook on things."
Jack Roslovic gave Columbus a 4-3 lead at 14:45 of the third period before Valtteri Filppula tied it 4-4 at 16:18 off a scramble at the crease.

Vrana tipped a shot from Cholowski to give Detroit a 1-0 lead at 6:40 of the first period.
Cam Atkinson tied it 1-1 at 10:16, taking a pass through the crease from Patrik Laine for his 15th goal.
DeKeyser scored for the second straight game to put the Red Wings ahead 2-1 at 11:55 of the second. His fourth goal was a slap shot from the left circle.

Bjorkstrand tied it 2-2 at 13:15, scoring his 18th goal with a snap shot from the right circle.
The Blue Jackets took their first lead, 3-2, at 6:43 of the third period on Robinson's first NHL shorthanded goal. He scored his eighth goal on a one-timer from the left dot after a backhand pass from Nathan Gerbe.
"Good for the group in the locker room and good for the fans to get [a win] in front of them too," Robinson said.
Sam Gagner tied it 3-3 at 8:04, scoring with one second left on the same Red Wings power play.
"We want to get back on track, so it's going to be in our minds throughout the summer, what we can do to turn it around and get back on track," Bjorkstrand said.
NOTES:Tortorella won his 673rd NHL game to move past Mike Keenan for 12th place in NHL history. Tortorella is 673-541-132 with 37 ties in 1,383 games in 20 seasons with the Blue Jackets, New York Rangers, Tampa Bay Lightning and Vancouver Canucks, and 227-166-54 in 447 games in six seasons with Columbus. The fans in the closing minutes of regulation chanted "Tortorella-Tortorella." He is in the final year of his contract. … Domi had the lone penalty, roughing at 6:05 of the third period. … Vrana scored 11 points (eight goals, three assists) in 11 games after being acquired in a trade with the Washington Capitals on April 12. He finished with 19 goals. … Detroit won the season series 4-2-2. Columbus was 4-3-1.
