The Bolts made six selections in Chicago during the 2017 NHL Draft. That included defenseman Cal Foote of the Kelowna Rockets in the first round, 14th overall. After Foote, the Lightning selected forwards Alexander Volkov in the second round, 48th overall, and Alexei Lipanov in the 3rd round, 76th overall. The Lightning made two picks in the sixth round, including defenseman Nicklaus Perbix of Elk River High School in Minnesota at 169th overall and center Cole Guttman from the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the USHL at 180th. Tampa Bay closed out the 2017 draft by selecting center Samuel Walker from Edina High School with their only selection in the seventh round, 200th overall.
