THE SCOOP

The Devils head to Detroit looking to bounce back from a 4-1 loss to the Ottawa Senators Monday night at Prudential Center.

New Jersey outshot Ottawa 30-20 but couldn't solve Linus Ullmark until late in the third period. Shane Pinto scored just nine seconds into the second period to give the Senators the lead, and Stephen Halliday added a power-play goal later in the frame.

Tim Stutzle extended Ottawa's lead to three in the third before Arseny Gritsyuk scored his first goal of the season, with Jack Hughes picking up the assist. Tyler Kleven added an empty-net goal to round out the scoring.

The loss dropped New Jersey to 2-3-0 through its first five games and ended a three-game homestand that included a 5-3 loss to Utah and a 4-1 victory over Vancouver.

In Saturday's win against the Canucks, Nico Hischier scored twice on the power play, including his 200th career NHL goal, and added an assist for a three-point afternoon. Jake Allen also reached a milestone, playing in his 500th career NHL game and stopping 20 shots in the victory.

New Jersey's power play converted three times against Vancouver after scoring just once in its opening three games. The Devils will look to rediscover that success as they close out their first back-to-back of the season.

Detroit, meanwhile, enters Tuesday with a 1-3-1 record after dropping its last two games.

The Red Wings are coming off a 1-0 shootout loss in Montreal Saturday night. Detroit and Montreal went scoreless through regulation and overtime, with Daniil Tarasov stopping all 30 shots he faced before Zack Bolduc scored the lone goal of the shootout for the Canadiens.

The loss came one night after Detroit fell 6-3 to Seattle despite holding a 41-24 advantage in shots. The Kraken scored four consecutive second-period goals to take control, overcoming an early 2-1 Red Wings lead.

Detroit's lone victory so far this season came against Ottawa on Oct. 6, a 5-3 win in which Alex DeBrincat had two goals and an assist, Lucas Raymond recorded three assists and Dylan Larkin contributed a goal and an assist in his season debut.

The Red Wings have struggled to find consistent offense in the early going, scoring 10 goals in five games. They've also been shut out twice, including a 2-0 loss to the Rangers in their season opener.

DeBrincat leads Detroit with five points, while Viktor Arvidsson has scored a team-leading three goals. Raymond leads the club with four assists.

The Devils won two of three meetings against Detroit last season, including a 5-3 victory at Little Caesars Arena in April. Jesper Bratt scored twice in the third period as New Jersey rallied from three separate deficits to win and eliminate Detroit from playoff contention.

Tuesday marks the first of three meetings between the teams this season.
