WHAT'S NEXT
The Devils hit the road for a three-game Western Canadian swing starting next Tuesday at Vancouver. The game can be seen on MSG+ and heard on the Devils Hockey Network, including right here at NewJerseyDevils.com. Puck drop is 10:08 p.m. ET.
Here are some observations from the game...
- The night featured a battle between two of the next best stars in the National Hockey League as 20-year-olds Jack Hughes and Trevor Zegras, childhood friends, faced each other for the first time in their young careers. - Hughes and Zegras played youth hockey together at 7 years old, went to high school together, played in the U.S. National Team Development Program together and were drafted the same year in 2019 (Hughes No. 1; Zegras No. 9). They even had dinner the evening before at Hughes' home (they ordered in, no one did the cooking). So, you knew they wanted to get the best of one another.

Neither player produced a point, but Hughes got the W.

- Hughes had his team record 13-game home streaking broken. He finished the run with nine goals and 21 points. - The Devils' competitive advantage lies in their speed. The most glaring example is in their transition attack, as evidenced by Tomas Tatar's first goal for the club. Forward Jesper Boqvist picked off the puck in the neutral zone and he and found Tatar as both immediately pivoted and sped up ice. They duo played pitch and catch. Tatar was able to blow past Anaheim's Josh Mahura and cut to the net. Boqvist made a great pass and Tatar finished with a nicer move to pull it forehand and go five-hole. But that entire play was the result of the turnover, transition and speed. - The Devils had two great opportunities on the power play in the first two periods, but generated zero shots on both. Poor passes, bad reads and a few blocks were the culprits, but that would have been a perfect opportunity for the team to make a difference with the man-advantage. - Defenseman Ryan Graves left the game halfway through the third period after a Cam Fowler shot hit him on the inside of his left ankle. He left the game but returned late in the period. - Congratulations to Devils head coach Lindy Ruff, who passed Al Arbour for fifth-place on the NHL's all-time games coach list. Tonight was Ruff's 1,608 game as a bench boss.
