Washington continues its three-game road trip on Friday night when it makes its lone visit to the Lone Star State this season. The Caps face the Stars in Dallas in the middle match of the trip, and in the back half of a set of back-to-back games.
For the first time this season, the Caps lost the front end of a set of back-to-backs, falling 5-2 to the Blues on Thursday night in St. Louis in the trip opener. Washington led 2-1 early in the second, but the Blues rolled over the Caps the rest of the way, scoring four unanswered goals to win going away.
"They were hungry around our net, and they got a couple of those kind of goals," says Washington winger Brett Connolly of the Blues. "It was kind of deflating. It happens.
"Obviously you want to win every game and play well every night. But we've played really well this year. We've had really good stretches. The last two haven't gone our way, but it happens in this league. I don't think anyone is happy with the way we played and the way we worked. Our details weren't great; we were sloppy and turning pucks over. But that's hockey, that's life. You deal with it and you move on, and we'll be better [Friday]."

Thursday's loss was the Caps' second in succession, marking the first time in a month they've lost two straight. Washington lost in similar fashion on Monday afternoon, surrendering five unanswered goals to the Nashville Predators in a 6-3 home ice loss.
Two games shy of the midpoint of their 2018-19 schedule, the Capitals haven't lost as many as three straight games at any point this season. They'll need a win over the Stars on Friday to keep that run alive.
"We've been playing pretty good hockey up until the last five periods or so," says Caps defenseman Matt Niskanen. "So let's jump right back on the horse [Friday] and try to play better, and see if we can get a win in Dallas."
Dallas has always been a tough town for the Capitals. Washington has earned consecutive 4-3 overtime victories on its last two visits to Big D, accounting for two of the Caps' total of five wins ever (5-13-0) in 18 visits to Dallas. Last season marked the first time since 1995-96 that the Caps won twice in the same season against Dallas, and just the second time Washington has ever done so in the 13 seasons in which it has faced the Stars twice since the franchise moved south from Minnesota in 1993-94.
"We are playing these teams that are desperate, desperate teams for points and we've got another one [Friday] in Dallas," says Caps coach Todd Reirden. "That has been kind of the way it has gone all year, we get every team's best and on the road we've been really good. Up until [Thursday], we had a better road record than home record, and now we're back to right around even.
"So it will be important that we respond as a group [on Friday]. We'll get some different guys in there and a little bit of energy from them hopefully, and we can respond like we'd like to after a tough loss."

Since their season high four-game winning streak came to an end early last month, the Stars have gone 5-6-1 over their last dozen games. Dallas comes into Friday's game on a bit of a good run, owning a 4-1-1 mark in its last half dozen games.
Friday's game concludes a four-game homestand for the Stars, who have gone 2-0-1 in the first three games. Dallas defeated Detroit and New Jersey, and those victories were sandwiched around a 3-2 overtime loss at the hands of the Montreal Canadiens.
The Stars' win over the Devils was a 5-4 triumph on Wednesday night. Dallas rookie sensation Miro Heiskanen became the third defenseman in franchise history to record two multi-goal games in his rookie season, joining teammate John Klingberg (2014-15) and Brad Maxwell (1977-78) in gaining that distinction.
The 19-year-old Heiskanen has 19 points (nine goals, 10 assists) on the season, a franchise record for teenaged blueliners. Heiskanen surpassed ex-Caps defenseman Doug Hicks, who had 18 points (six goals, 12 assists) as a 19-year-old in 1974-75. Hicks was Minnesota's sixth overall choice in the 1974 NHL Entry Draft, and he concluded his NHL career with an 18-game stint in Washington from 1981-83.
Friday's game is the second and final meeting between the Caps and the Stars this season. The Stars took a 4-3 overtime decision over the Caps on Nov. 3 in the District.
