


Mike Haviland was hired as an assistant coach by the Columbus Blue Jackets on Aug. 8, 2024 and brings over two decades of coaching experience to the club.
Haviland, 58, joined Columbus as spending two seasons as associate coach with the Cleveland Monsters, the Blue Jackets’ American Hockey League affiliate, from 2022-24. Prior to that, he served as the head coach at Colorado College from 2014-21. He was also head coach for the AHL’s Norfolk Admirals (2005-07), Rockford IceHogs (2007-08) and Hershey Bears (2013-14) and earned AHL Coach of the Year honors with Norfolk in 2006-07. He also served as an assistant coach with Norfolk in 2012-13. From 2008-12, he was an assistant coach with the Chicago Blackhawks and helped the club capture the 2010 Stanley Cup championship.
The Middletown, New Jersey native began his coaching career in the ECHL as an assistant coach with the Trenton Titans from 1999-2001. He served as head coach of the ECHL’s Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies from 2001-04 and returned to the Titans as head coach for 2004-05. He led his teams to Kelly Cup championships in 2002-03 (Bullies) and 2004-05 (Titans) and was named ECHL Coach of the Year in 2002-03.
As a player, Haviland was selected by the New Jersey Devils in the 1990 Supplemental Draft and played two years of professional hockey in the AHL and ECHL. He played collegiate hockey at Elmira College in New York from 1986-90, finishing with 68 goals and 152 points and earning a first-team All-American selection in 1989-90.
Haviland and his wife, Kristin, are the parents of a blended family of six children Ryan, Kailyn, Shane, TJ, Riley and Kelly.
