Matt Coronato scored on a 6-on-4 powerplay with Dustin Wolf on the bench with 1:14 to play in the third period to force extra time, but the Flames would fall 4-3 to the visiting Jets in a shootout Saturday night.

After a scoreless first frame, both teams scored twice in the second period, Jake Bean – with his first of the season – and Kevin Bahl getting goals for the homeside.

Cole Perfetti would get a powerplay marker early in the third before Coronato brought the C of Red to its feet with his fifth marker of the season.

Morgan Frost had two helpers on the night and was 52.9% at the dot, while Wolf made 20 saves.

Connor Hellebuyck had 31 stops at the other end for Winnipeg.

In the shootout, Frost and Jonathan Huberdeau were stopped, as were the first two Winnipeg shooters – Kyle Connor and Jonathan Toews.

Rasmus Andersson was denied by Hellebuyck before Alex Iafallo would beat Wolf for the victory.

Sam Honzek left the game in the second period for the Flames with an upper-body injury after a collision with Mikael Backlund.

The Backlund/Honzek/Blake Coleman trio was setting the tempo early for Calgary, Coleman feeding Backlund - who was an impressivce 68.4% night in the faceoff circle - on the backdoor off a rush but the puck going off the heel of the captain’s stick, then Coleman later forcing Hellebuyck to make a shoulder save on a deceptive riser.

Both goalies came up big when needed, Calgary ending up with a 12-8 edge in shots in the opening stanza.

Toews got a wraparound shot from behind the net that Wolf saved with bodies around, the rebound going right to the stick of Perfetti in the blue paint but the Calgary ‘tender denied his quick offering.

Hellebuyck made his biggest stop of the frame when he stuck with Frost’s forehand, backhand deke attempt on a breakaway.

Meanwhile Wolf was doing Wolf things, stopping another wraparound from Toews and then later on the same shift, pushing across his crease to snap a pad out to the pipe and stop Toews on the other side of the net.

Then the goals came in quick succession in the second.

Mark Scheifele opened the scoring at 7:19, but 33 seconds later Bean tied it up with a mid-range shot after a faceoff win in the Jets zone by Frost, that led to a Brayden Pachal point shot that went wide before Bean got the puck and put it in the cage.

But 33 seconds after that, a Jets shot on a delayed penalty went off the skate of Frost and to Tanner Pearson who fired it home through a maze of bodies out front.

Bahl would knot things back up at 13:29 with a point shot that went off the skate of Winnipeg defenceman Logan Stanley and past Hellebuyck.

The Jets would gull ahead at 1:20 into the third period on the powerplay, Wolf stopping Connor’s flank shot but the puck going off his shoulder and the post and then out behind him and Perfetti was there to put it in the open cage.
