Morgan Klimchuk is tied for the team lead in scoring in Stockton

by Aaron Vickers @AAVickers /

Morgan Klimchuk admitted there was a lot to take away from his first professional season of hockey.

Points, however, weren't necessarily among them.

He spent the summer rebuilding his game in search of rekindling his offensive touch.

So far, so good.

Right from the start.

"First game, first shift I was lucky enough to get one and I've been rolling since then," Klimchuk said.

"When you have confidence and you're playing with good players and the coaches trust you and put you in positions to succeed it's a recipe for success. That's kind of what it's been so far. Good fortune and fortunate enough to play with some good players.

"When the coaches trust you and put you with those players and put you in those situations you're going to have success."

by Torie Peterson @ToriePeterson /

When the Calgary Flames assigned Matthew Phillips to the Victoria Royals of the Western Hockey League in September, they sent him off with a few objectives.

"'You need to play at a high pace, get stronger and be a real leader on the team - help the team win.' That's what the message was going down," assistant general manager Craig Conroy told

"We just want his game to evolve and keep growing - not to put too much pressure on himself but help the team win."

A month into the 2016-17 season and it is clear the message was received.

The 18-year-old is off to scorching start with the Royals, scoring eight goals and 15 points through 15 games in October.
